Should animals be kept in captivity?

Dawn Brancheau with killer whale

A SeaWorld Florida worker has died after being attacked by a killer whale she trained.

The tragic accident has raised questions about animals being kept in captivity.

But what do you make of animals being kept in zoos, aquariums or theme parks?

Perhaps you think it's really important for conservation, as long as the animals are looked after properly?

Or maybe you'd like to see all animals living in the wild?

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

Your comments

"I am writing this comment to say how cruel it is for whales and dolphins to live in captivity. We are hurting them for our own entertainment! On the other hand, if we release them into the wild, how would it be able to get its own food?!"

Sophie, 9, Manchester, England

"Zoos are good fun, but only if they look after the animals by feeding them every day and keeping them safe."

Mahdi, 14, Leicester, England

"I don't think they should because it is cruel."

Lily, 9, County Durham, England

"What really needs to happen is hunting should be banned along with destroying the forest and jungle. Then the animals will not get extinct in the first place."

Anna, 12, Reading, England

"It is bad because they have been taken away from their natural surroundings, but good because they get well fed and looked after."

Bayleigh, 9, Preston, England

"It may be a good idea to keep this poor animal in captivity as it may cause some harm in the wild. I am not saying to keep training it, but it may be a good idea to look after it."

Rebecca, 11, Stockport, England

"Animals should be let go. Even if it means losing a bit of money it's worth it to see them go off and explore their own world."

Caitlin, 10, Sunderland, England

"Putting an animal in captivity for life is like putting us in our bedrooms for life with no bed, gadgets and toys, just a room with nothing in it. It shouldn't be allowed unless the animal is nearly extinct, in which case it should be put in a breeding programme."

Natalie, 11, County Durham, England

"Animals that were born in captivity would be destined to perish in the wild because they have not got the skills needed to survive."

Katy, 11, London, England

"I do not agree that animals should be kept in captivity. I do know that the animals might die out, but if you take it out of its home and take it to SeaWorld then it has got to get used to a new environment."

Emilia, 7, Whitchurch, UK

"I think that the whale should be set free. It may not like the atmosphere in the park and the pool is too small for it!"

Jobeth, 12, Glasgow, Scotland

"I think that some animals should be kept in captivity if they were born and raised with humans, or it's a conservation programme. Other animals should be put back into the wild, like this whale, because it has already killed two people and it could do it again! This is a tough decision."

Natasha, 12, Swindon, England

"We believe that every animal deserves freedom. If they are in captivity, then the park must create an environment where the animals feel safe and they are not isolated or lonely. Theme Park shows are entertaining and if the animals did not enjoy performing, they would not take part. Some zoos have fantastic breeding programmes which are helping to protect endangered species. However, if we stopped destroying the animals' natural habitat, perhaps we wouldn't need such programmes."

Class 5.3J, 11-12, Surrey, England

"I think that a vast majority of animals should be kept in the wild. Animals should only be kept in captivity if they are at risk. This was an unfortunate event which shouldn't have happened, but they should not keep killer whales in captivity."

Joni, 11, Bristol, England

"I don't think animals should be kept in captivity because they are supposed to be in the wild with all their friends. Yes, there is more of a chance of them getting killed, but that is where they belong."

Lily, 9, County Durham, England

"Animals shouldn't be kept in captivity. Whales would normally swim hundreds of kilometres a day so being kept in a tank, even a big one, can't compare to their natural environment."

Amelia, 10, Mid Glamorgan, England

"I think that the conservation of wild animals is very important but I do not feel that they should be kept for show."

Nimah, 9, Belfast, N.Ireland

"I don't think animals should be kept in captivity because they must get sad to be away from their families."

Tara, 12, Ireland

"You shouldn't keep the whale in SeaWorld because it will just get more angry. That's why it killed that poor girl, because it was angry."

Harriette, 9, London, England

"Animals should be kept in zoos because it is less likely that they will become extinct."

Lucy, 10, Lincolnshire, England

"I don't think that animals should be kept in small spaces. They need lots of room so they can move around."

Jessica, 8, Gwent, Wales

"Well I think what the whale did was very wrong but I understand why it happened. It was stressed and bored, it wanted to play or do something and it probably saw Dawns' pony tail went for it. That's why we shouldn't put them in captivity."

Amber, 12, Lincolnshire, England

"Some animals are better off in a zoo because they are ill. However, I think all animals should be free."

Bethan, 11, Clwyd, Wales

"SeaWorld should start NOT training them because more people might die."

Nelsey, 13, Houston, Texas

"I think animals should not be kept in captivity. Animals are meant to be free and after that killer whale killed that poor woman, SeaWorld are stupid to keep it in captivity!"

Harriet, 10, London, England

"I do not think whales should be kept in captivity because they are big animals and they need more space to swim and do other things in the water!!"

Sharon, 14, London, England

"Animals should NOT be kept in captivity! It is like monkeys keeping us in cages to perform at the circus. No matter how long you train something, its instincts come back sometime, especially when hunting for food!"

Alma, 11, Miami, USA

"I do not think whales should be kept in captivity because they need space to be free and able to swim around!"

Ruby, 12, Cheshire, England

"I think they should be kept in captivity because animals near extinction will die out by hunters. Animals won't know that they're being saved and may kill trainers, so I think people should make a huge pool, keep them SAFE and let them do whatever they want to do."

Woong Gyu Jin, 10, Seoul, Korea

"I think animals should not be captured and put in captivity, especially now we know that they can harm us by mistake. However, I think the ones that are in captivity now should stay because they would die in the wild."

Amy, 9, Tokyo, Japan

"I think it's really cruel and mean. Release it back into its real habitat so it can see its family."

Sam, 8, New South Wales, Australia

"No, I don't think animals should be kept in captivity because they get stressed and sad."

Lily, 10, Suffolk, England

"The whale should be taken out of this park. Don't get me wrong, I love whales, but not this whale in particular. I think if the whale does stay it is kind of disrespecting Dawn's family."

Taneka, 12, Bedfordshire, England

"I think animals should not be kept in captivity because they need their freedom. It is like us being kept in zoos and animal parks."

Bhavisha, 10, London, England

"They always say you can take a lion out of a jungle but you can't take the jungle out of the lion. You can also understand why this animal is dangerous, it's a killer whale!"

Moe, 13, Surrey, England

"I think it depends on how the animals react to people and whether or not they are calm."

Megan, 10, Leeds, England

"Big killer whales should not be kept in small places."

Eryn, 9, Bradford, England

"Killer whales shouldn't be kept in captivity because they are too big and don't get enough exercise, that's why their fins flop over. It's like you having to live in the bath all your life."

James, 12, Somerset, England

"I don't think that animals should be kept in captivity. They belong in the wild and sometimes might not want to work every day."

Rebecca, 11, UK

"I'm certain the killer whale just thought that the lady was an animal or toy that he could eat."

Jessica, 9, Surrey, England

"Whales should not be kept in captivity because they are animals like us."

Anishka, 10, Dubai, UAE

"I was at SeaWorld three weeks ago and I am very sad about what has happened. The show was BRILLIANT but I really think that wild animals belong in the wild."

Nathanael, 6, Mid Glamorgan, Wales

"I think there should be no dangerous animals in captivity."

Niamh, 9, Colwyd, Wales

"The whale should be released because it took someone's life. It should go!"

Danielle, 10, Middlesex, England

"If they are not kept in captivity we can't see them and they might get extinct in the wild!"

Lara, 10, London, England

"I was at SeaWorld myself two years ago and saw the show. It was fantastic but when someone gets killed you have to think to yourself should they be set free?"

Adam, 11, Belfast, England

"I think they shouldn't be kept in captivity."

Hannah, 9, Wiltshire, England

"I don't feel that animals should be kept in captivity. Keeping a killer whale in a pool is like keeping a human inside a small house, which is a very sad thought."

Savannah, 13, London, England

"I don't think that they should be kept in captivity because they will get bored."

Nicolas, 10, West Sussex, England

"Killer whales should be free to live in the wild and swim for countless miles. Trust me, I know everything about killer whales."

Anna, 11, Birmingham, England

"Well it is a killer whale, it's in its nature to kill."

Chloe, 11, Herefordshire, England

"I think that if the animals are endangered they should be kept in captivity because breeding could help get the numbers up. Otherwise no. If they are hurt they should be in captivity but when they are well they should be let free."

Emma, 10, Herne Bay, England

"I was at SeaWorld Orlando three weeks ago and I am very sad about what has happened. The Shamu show was BRILLIANT! But I really think that wild animals belong in the wild."

Martha, 8, Bridgend, Wales

"Absolutely not! How would YOU like to be kept in a pool when you were meant to swim in huge endless oceans!"

Eny, 12, Swansea, Wales

"I think animals should not be kept in captivity because it is cruel."

Maria, 7, Ballymena, Scotland

"I think animals should be set free because if they are in captivity, they will become bored and they will start to play and they don't know that it is dangerous to play with humans as they are whales. So they could kill you by accident."

Olivia, 9, Folkstone, England

"I think they are very dangerous, they should be set free back into the sea because what if the whale kills another trainer?"

Victoria, 10, East Kilbride, Scotland

"I think animals should not be kept in captivity as when you release them they won't be used to the wild."

Jill, 10, Dunbartonshire, Scotland

"I think it is wrong to keep them in captivity but it helps them if they are ill so I am not very sure!"

Jessica, 11, Coventry, England

"I think animals being kept in captivity is ok if it is for conservation reasons."

Morgan, 10, Conwy, Wales

"I don't think any animal should be kept in captivity."

Rebecca, 11, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

"As amazing as these animals are at doing all these tricks and stunts, they are after all wild animals and are not meant to be kept like this."

Indhea, 11, Essex, England

"Animals aren't meant to be kept in captivity but it is a good thing if an animal is near extinction. Those who are not in danger should be treated with respect and be let free."

Hannah, 12, Carmarthenshire, Wales

"No animal should be in captivity, they should be free. I think that they should only stay in captivity when they are hurt or ill and then released."

Sophie, 11, Wolverhampton

"I think animals should be kept in captivity, but only if they are looked after properly."

Lizzie, 14, Lancaster, England

"Animals should never be taken out of their natural habitat unless they are injured and suffering."

Jenny, 11, Merseyside, England

"I don't think it's right unless they are breeding the animals as conservation campaigns. You shouldn't just release them though because they won't have the instinct to survive the wild!"

Sinead, 12, Essex, England

"They shouldn't live behind bars their whole life."

Molly, 8, Ontario, Canada

"Animals bred in captivity will have little or no natural instinct that will help them survive in the wild, which is a big downside. Animals not bred in captivity should be free, unless they are endangered and need all the help they get."

Erin, 13, Cambridgeshire, England

"I do not think that animals should be kept in captivity. I think that animals really deserve their freedom."

Erin, 10, Perthshire, Scotland

"I think that the whale should be put into the sea. I am quite sad."

Colm, 9, Bedfordshire, England

"I think animals should be kept in captivity because animals that are endangered need a back up in case they become extinct."

Megan, 11, North Yorkshire, England

"Why should they be kept in a small pool, all cramped, when they could be free swimming around the sea?"

Jonnie, 12, Surrey, England

"I think that animals should be free."

Rebekah, 8, County Durham, England

"I think that it is out of order to put any wild animals into captivity, unless for breeding purposes, setting them free when the numbers are back up!"

Joely, 12, Warwickshire, England

"I think that they should stay where they belong."

Charlotte, 6, Stockport, England

"Orcas shouldn't be kept in captivity because they don't know how to live a normal life."

Samantha, 12, Midlothian, Scotland

"It is cruel to animals."

Olivia, 8, Wiltshire, England

"I think animals should only be kept in zoos to breed or if they are sick. Although keepers try their hardest, they can never recreate the animals' natural environment."

Saffron, 11, Merseyside, England

"I don't think animals should be kept in captivity because they are supposed to be in the wild."

Philippa, 11, Surrey, England

"Orcas should not be kept in captivity but if they were released into the wild they would die because their immune system is not equipped to deal with ocean water. I just think they shouldn't capture any more!"

Luke, 13, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

"I think it's really mean. I think they should be out in the ocean."

Megan, 10, London, England

"I don't think they should be kept in theme parks but aquariums and zoos are ok if the animals are looked after. Most zoos keep animals not for money but in case the species dies out in the wild."

Robyn, 10, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

"I think that it is cruel to keep animals in captivity. I think they should only if the species is endangered and nearly extinct or very sick. Every animal deserves a life that's filled with adventure and action, not just stuck in a cage."

Amy, 11, Glasgow, Scotland

"I don't think that they should be kept in captivity unless they're endangered, like the tiger."

Megan, 10, Carmarthenshire, Wales

"I think it's wrong. They should be free to go back home where they belong."

Ella, 13, London, England

"Animals shouldn't be kept in captivity because if you take animals to zoos they become distressed and start to become a danger to their keepers!"

"I do not think orcas and dolphins should be kept in captivity. They just get restless and that does not do them any good."

John, 9, County Tyrone, N.Ireland

Charlotte, 10, Buckinghamshire, England

"It is horrible these animals are kept in captivity. The trainer probably only got killed because the whale was stressed and didn't want to be kept in an enclosure. This is not right and should be stopped immediately."

Amy, 11, Surrey, England

"I don't think whales should be kept in captivity because the ocean is their home and it's a big place. It's almost as if they are being kept in a pond. We wouldn't like it if we were born in a massive house and then had move to a really, really small one."

Teirney, 11, West Sussex, England

"It is terribly sad that she was killed. When my family visited SeaWorld the whale was just a baby, I think they should release her."

Jude, 11, Northamptonshire, England

"Whales are wild animals and so they should be in the wild."

Freya, 10, Berkshire, England

"It is a tragic incident but if the animal was left in its natural environment none of this would have happened. Surely sooner or later it was going to retaliate?"

Francesca, 10, Buckinghamshire, England

"Animals should not be kept in captivity. I also think that killer whales should not be swam with! Whales are happy in their normal habitat and can look after themselves easily."

Beth, 10, Derby, England

"Animals should not be kept in captivity. It's like when people were sold as slaves. It was stopped and I hope animals like this are let free."

April, 12, Leeds, England

"This just shows that all trained animals wouldn't do it unless they wanted to. I think that animals have a better life in the wild."

Laura, 13, Gloucestershire, England

"Whales should not be kept in captivity. They might attack another trainer because they get stressed as they do not have the space they would get in the wild."

Adam, 8, Glasgow, Scotland

"Killer whales should not be kept as pets to try and make money. They are wild and it's cruel to keep them in a swimming pool and make them do tricks for our entertainment. Its their life and does not belong to us."

Rebecca, 12, Berkshire, England

"Animals should not be kept in captivity because people can die. They should be in their natural habitat."

Zoe, 10, Somerset, England

Aliyah, 12, Somerset, England

"I think it is cruel to keep them so people can watch them even if it provides interesting experiences. Would you like to be watched all day?"

Alex, 10, Aberdeen, Scotland

"I think it's not very fair to keep whales in parks. Think how you would feel if some whales watched you for entertainment? I think it would be better if people left animals in the wild."

Livvie, 10, England

"Animals should be in captivity, especially if they are endangered, because they need to be looked after and treated well. The whale must have attacked the keeper by accident or she may have slipped and drowned."

Georgina, 10, Brighton, England

"I don't think it's fair on the animals. If they become dangerous they are better off calm and free in the wild, then maybe we will be safer and so will they."

Sophie, Aberdeen, Scotland

"I think that we should keep animals because they enjoy being there and it helps them to breed."

Chloe, 11, Lincolnshire, England

"I love killer whales. They are very widespread creatures and can be spotted in most areas of the world. It is terrible that these beautiful animals have such little room to move in their enclosures. This may anger them and cause them to behave in these unusual ways."

Robert, 12, Angus, Scotland

"I don't think they should be kept in captivity. They should be let out into the wild so they can live a happy life."

Grace, 10, Lancashire, England

Amy, 10, Northamptonshire, England

Natasha, 11, Devon, England

"I think that all killer whales should be left alone in their own world, not be bugged by us."

The shows are amazing, but it is definitely not worth it. But I do pay my respects to the poor woman who got killed, see again - it's not worth it. Thanks x"

Stephen, 13, Lincolnshire, England

Stella, 11, London, England

"It's nice to see animals in zoos and aquariums that you wouldn't normally get the chance to see, but it's not fair to lock them up and make them perform so we can be entertained!
