Emergency aid has started arriving in Madeira after flash flooding wrecked parts of the Portuguese island.

Violent rainstorms resulted in torrents of mud, water and rocks swamping the capital Funchal and other towns.

At least 40 people are believed to have died during the storms and many more were injured.
