Canada grabs second gold

Maelle Ricker

Canada has won its second Olympic gold medal at the Winter Olympics after Maelle Ricker cruised to victory in the snowboard cross event.

There was lots of support for the 31-year-old as she lives in Vancouver where the games are being held.

Briton Zoe Gillings managed an eighth place finish in the same event even though she had a problem with her knee.

Snowboard cross is a combination of fast turns and jumps with four boarders going head-to-head in a race.

Other British teams have also struggled. The men's curlers lost 6-4 to European champions Sweden in their first-round match.

In the latest medal standings, Germany top the charts with three golds and four silver medals.
