Giant spider crab arrives in Birmingham

Crabzilla

A crab believed to be the biggest ever seen in Britain has arrived at Birmingham's National Sea Life Centre.

It's a Japanese spider crab with a 2m (6.5ft) claw span and he's been christened 'Crabzilla'.

He's been flown over from Japan and is stopping off in the UK for a few weeks before making his home in Belgium.

A spokesman at the sea life centre said: "It's rumoured these crabs can grow as big as 4m, big enough to straddle a car."

The open-topped ray tank at the centre has the icy cold waters Crabzilla needs, and will be his home until the end of March.

The giant crab's front limbs are his feeding arms, and each one is over 1.5m (5ft) long - that's taller than most cars!
