DVD review: UP

UP

Release date

Disney Pixar's UP is released on DVD and Blu-ray on 15 February, rated PG.

The stars

The film is more about the story than the stars who voice the characters, so there aren't really any famous names in the cast.

One of the main characters, a young boy called Russell, is voiced by a nine-year-old called Jordan Najai.

And you might recognise the voice of Dug the dog, played by Bob Peterson, as he's voiced loads of other animations, including Ratatouille, Cars and Finding Nemo.

The Plot

As a boy, Carl Frederickson meets adventurous Ellie and the pair dream about travelling to South America in search of a lost world. But things don't go to plan, and the couple never make it on any adventures.

A still from UP

Years later when Carl is a retired balloon salesman, he decides it's better late than never to live out your dreams. So with the bulldozers literally knocking at his door to make way for new houses, Carl gets loads of balloons, ties them to his house and flies to South America.

The trouble is, just before taking flight, Carl was visited by a Wilderness Explorer (basically a Scout) called Russell, who's trying to earn his final badge for helping the elderly.

Russell accidently gets swept away with Carl and the floating house! With his unwanted travel buddy, Carl and Russell head off for the adventure of a lifetime.

Along the way, the pair meet a famous explorer Charles Muntz, who's trying to trap a rare bird and take it back to civilisation. But will Carl give up his dream to help Russell save the rare bird from being captured?

DVD Extras

There's lots of really good stuff to check out in the extras.

Dug the dog (Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment)

Take a sneak peak at Dug's special mission!

As well as the usual director's commentary, loads of alternative endings and the animated short Partly Cloudy, which was played before the film in cinemas, there's a HUGE treat for Dug fans.

Dug's special mission is a brand new animated short that follows Dug on his "special mission" in the minutes before he meets Carl and Russell. And it's great!

And for anyone interested in how UP came to life, check out the Adventure Is Out There documentary. It tells the story of the film-makers' real-life journey to South America to research the look and story of the film.

Best bits

Pretty much all of it, but especially the scenes with Dug!

The scenes with Carl and Russell trying to look after Kevin the bird are really funny too. He's very mischievous and keeping him safe results in lots of silliness and gives the audience a chance to get to know the characters better.

The end of the film is very exciting with plenty of action, twists and turns to keep you glued to your seat. Look out for the scene at the end where the pack of dogs fly little planes! The animation is amazing!

Fave characters

A still from UP

It's really hard to pick just one, so we'll give you two!

Russell, the boy who travels with Carl has loads of laugh-out-loud lines. It's really easy to relate to him and he's the perfect balance to Carl's grumpiness.

Dug 'the talking' dog is fabulous too. He's really cute and says and does exactly the sort of things you'd expect your own pet pooch to... If they could talk that is!

Any weak bits?

There aren't really any, although the film does ease into the story quite slowly, so if you're expecting action all the way you could be disappointed.

Hit or miss?

No surprises if you've read the rest of the review, this is a definite HIT!

UP was one of 2009's biggest box office hits and the DVD is sure to top film charts too.
