Baby turtles have surprised scientists with how they make their first steps after being born.

Experts had always thought the cute little creatures 'swim' through the sand towards the sea once they have hatched from their nest.

But now video footage released shows they paddle across the sand using their tiny flippers and in fact 'walk' towards the sea.

Because a turtle is adapted for a life at sea, up until now it was believed that sand was too unstable for the new hatchlings to walk on.
