Film Review: Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief

Sonali meets the stars

Release date

12 February 2010, rated PG

The stars

You probably won't have seen any of the film's young actors before, although they've all been in other movies or TV shows.

The adults are played by some fairly famous actors. Pierce Brosnan, who was James Bond before Daniel Craig, plays Chiron the Centaur. Steve Coogan, who was Octavius in the Night at the Museum movies, plays Hades, God of the Underworld. Sean Bean, who was Boromir in the Lord of the Rings films, plays Zeus.

The Plot

Percy Jackson is a dyslexic teenager living in New York City. He soon discovers he is the son of the Greek God Poseidon, which is why he has so much trouble reading in the human world.

A lightning bolt belonging to Zeus, the God of all Gods, goes missing and he blames Percy, which means Percy and his family are in danger. His mum gets kidnapped by Hades.

Percy has to go and stay at a demigod training camp called Camp Half Blood. After learning how to use his powers, he goes off with fellow demigod Annabeth (daughter of the Goddess Athena) and his satyr protector Grover to clear his name, rescue his mother and find Zeus's lightning bolt.

Best bits

The film has great action scenes. And the special effects are really good. I thought Medusa's snake-covered head was one of the best bits. Every time I saw it, I kept having to itch my head because it really did give me the creeps!

I hadn't read the book, but I didn't feel it mattered at all. The movie explains what's going on very well so there's no confusion.

And if you haven't learnt about Ancient Greece at school, you end up learning loads about it without realising.

Fave characters

I loved Chiron the Centaur - he looks so realistic! And Grover has the funniest lines.

Any weak bits?

It's not clear why Percy is accused of stealing the lightning bolt in the first place.

It's also a bit strange that he suddenly became a good fighter without much training- but I guess he is a demigod after all!

Although you don't miss this film not being in 3D, I think the makers of the next PJ movie should seriously think about using it in the next one.

Hit or miss?

Hit.

There are loads of similarities with the Harry Potter series - the main characters are two boys and a girl, it's full of magical powers and there are loads of fight scenes against the baddies. Instead of Hogwart's, there's a secret training camp called Camp Half Blood (sound familiar?).

And just as Harry travelled to the magical world through King's Cross Station, Percy and his friends can get to Mount Olympus through the Empire State Building.

But there are lots of differences too. Hollywood is hoping this film will be as popular as Harry Potter on the big screen. I'm not sure it's going to be quite so big, but there's definitely room for more action adventure fantasy films.
