Giggs and Daley win sports awards

Giggs named Sports Personality

Ryan Giggs and Tom Daley have won the top awards at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Manchester United and Wales midfielder wasn't expected to pick up the prize - lots of people thought it would be F1 ace Jenson Button.

He came second ahead of world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis.

Diving star Tom Daley got the Young Sports Personality of the Year for the second time after winning gold at the world championships.

The 15-year-old said: "It really does mean a lot. It's been a good year for me."

Surprise win

In the main event, Ryan Giggs was almost lost for words as he picked up his award.

He joked that it was obvious he wasn't expected to win because he hadn't prepared a very good speech.

It's the first time a footballer has won the award since David Beckham in 2001.

In the other categories, the England cricket side took Team of the Year after winning the Ashes in the summer.

England footy manager Fabio Capello got Coach of the Year, and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt took the overseas prize for the second year running.
