Race to stop X Factor number one

Joe McElderry, One of the X Factor 2009 finalists

There's a massive campaign to try and stop the winner of X Factor storming their way to the top of the charts.

Around 500,000 people have joined an internet group promising to download a song from the 1990's on Sunday.

They want to stop X Factor from taking the Christmas number one spot for the fifth year in a row, as they think it has too much influence on the charts.

Judge Simon Cowell has responded by saying he thinks X Factor encourages people to go into record shops.

He also said the campaign against the X Factor song getting to number one wasn't very nice.

"It's incredibly dismissive of the people who watch and enjoy the show, where they treat our audience as if they're stupid, and I don't like that," he told reporters.

At the end of Saturday night's X Factor, one person will be voted off, leaving the final two to sing for the prize on Sunday.
