ITV sorry for Celebrity rat death

Gino D'Acampo and Stuart Manning

ITV, the channel which shows I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here, has apologised for the death of a rat during the show.

Police have charged Gino D'Acampo and Stuart Manning with animal cruelty after they killed a rat and ate it.

An ITV spokesman said the programme makers didn't realise that killing the rat would be against the law.

The RSPCA in Australia said it was "not acceptable" to kill the rat as part of a performance.

ITV has said they will make sure something like this doesn't happen in the next series of the show.

Basic food

At the time of the incident D'Acampo and Manning were living in a different part of the camp, where they only had very basic food to eat - rice and beans.

During that part of the show D'Acampo went into the video diary room and said that he had spotted the rat and picked it up and used his knife to kill it.

D'Acampo's normal job is a chef, and he was named King of the Jungle and the show's winner when the series ended at the weekend.

Is it cruel to use animals in TV shows?

"It doesn't make sense. Why would you kill animals for whatever reason? I think it is very wrong!"
