Boy uses his boat to help police

Ricky and Will

Ricky meets police boat hero

A 12-year-old boy is being called a hero by police after he helped them catch a suspected criminal.

Will took two police officers out in his boat, so they could chase a man who went into a lake to escape them.

The suspect had jumped from the first-floor window of a house, hurting both of his legs, before making a break for the water and trying to swim away.

But Will saw what was going on and told the police that he would row them out so they could arrest him.

Police say Will probably helped save the man's life too, because he was badly hurt and was struggling to stay afloat.

Will, who's from Cheshire in the north-west of England, said: "I've rowed since I was four so naturally when I got into the boat I took control. But when we got close to the man I started to get a bit worried."

Expert rower

Pc Mike Dawber was one of the policemen at the scene. He said: "Will told us that he was an expert rower and he was happy to take us out into the middle of the lake. I wasn't going to argue with Will."

Unfortunately after the man had recovered in hospital he escaped, and is now thought to have left the country.
