Simpsons celebrate 20th birthday

Matt Groening with his Simpsons creations

What YOU think of The Simpsons

It's happy birthday to you for the world's most famous cartoon family as the Simpsons celebrate 20 years of being on telly.

During that time, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie have seen their series become America's longest-running sitcom and longest-running animation.

The show is also set to be the longest-running prime-time series in America.

Simpsons creator Matt Groening said he always thought the show would be a success but it still felt "weird".

"The fact that we're still standing here some 20 years later and talking about it is very peculiar," he said. "But very happy."

Meanwhile, fans in America are getting the chance to create a brand new character for the show as part of the family's birthday celebrations.

The new Springfield resident will appear in an episode early in 2010.
