Are parakeets a problem for you?

Parakeet

Parakeets are becoming a really big problem in the UK, eating and harming other wildlife as well as being a general nuisance.

It's such big deal that new rules have been announced, allowing people to kill the birds without getting a special licence.

So are the small parrots a problem in YOUR area? have you seen them at school or in your garden - and are they causing a problem?

Maybe you even have some pictures of parakeets which you have snapped in your garden or at the park?

If so we want to hear from you and see you pics so send you comments and photos to us and let us know what you think. You can email pics to:newsroundpix@bbc.co.uk

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

"I think it terrible because they should have a right to live like us."

Jordan, 12, Irvine, Scotland

"I haven't seen them in my area, but I'm agreeing with the other guys. PLEASE, PLEASE don't kill these fantastic birds!"

Olivia, 10, Oxford, England

"One flew over my head!"

Emily, 9, Oxford, England

"They are not a nuisance, rats are a bigger problem than parakeets and they're not a nuisance. Parakeets are gorgeous animals and shouldn't deserve to be killed."

Nivetha, 11, Ilford, England

"I hate these birds and wouldn't care if they were killed! They used to annoy my dog Pepper when he went out in the back garden! I'm glad this new law has been passed! Pepper will be so much happier!"

Eoighan, 13, Yorkshire, England

"I see parakeets all the time. They look lovely! I don't think they are causing a problem so it shouldn't be legal to shoot them!"

Assiah, 9, London, England

"These birds are usually kept as pets but they could be helping the environment and killing all the bugs. We don't want spiders and flies, but I do not think they should kill them because they never do any harm."

Lucy, 12, Oakham, England

"Don't kill them, I hate hearing about poaching. No animal deserves to be killed, they are living creatures. I understand a problem has occurred but they are here to live not be killed."

Isabel, 11, Feltham, England

"These birds do not cause a problem for me because birds are living creatures just like humans and should be treated the same!"

Megan, 11, West Sussex, England

"They are not a problem for me because they are only birds! What harm can they cause us?"

Anne, 8, Maidstone, England

"Parakeets are lovely and should never be killed!"

Meg, 10, Wales

"I do not think that is fair. Give the parakeets a chance, they might be killing for a good reason."

Hannah, 9, Bracknell, England

"Not really, I never really see them much over here! But my next-door neighbour's granny has one as a pet and it doesn't really bother her much!"

Jessica, 11, Antrim, Northern Ireland

"Not really. In fact I was amazed that they are in the UK. Please don't kill them!!!"

Reuben, 10, Portobello, Scotland

"No. These birds are beautiful and don't deserve to be killed. They have done nothing wrong."

Molly, 10, Cardiff, Wales

"Parakeets are no problem for me, I think they are rather quite and unique!"

Hannah, 11, London, England

"I am always seeing these beautiful birds!"

Hollie, 10, Wales

"I have not seen any parakeets, but they look lovely!"

Annie, 10, Manchester, England

"No. Creatures should not be murdered whatever happens! People should try and help them not kill them!!"

Dorothy, 12, Cheshire, England

"No way!! They're absolutely beautiful creatures and they shouldn't be murdered. Killing them is like mass murder and shouldn't ever happen."

Ally, 13, Manchester, England

"I am always seeing the parakeets in my garden, which is great because I love wildlife, especially birds. I would never harm them!"

Anna, 10, London, England

"Once I saw something green in my next door neighbour's garden. When I went to look at it outside and it was a Parakeet attacking a Goldfinch!"

Lucy, 9, Oxford, England

"I haven't seen these cute little things anywhere, I haven't even heard of them! But they're beautiful so why would anybody want to kill them? I understand that they are causing a problem but surely there are kinder things to do than strangle the poor things?"

Alice, 9, Cheshire, England

"I think that it is pathetic to kill the parakeets. It's just nature and you should leave them be. We can't stop it just leave them!"

Matthew, 12, Essex, England

"My dad loves these parrots. Don't kill them please! If you do, my dad will be upset to hear about them being killed! LEAVE THEM ALONE!

Ursula, 12, New Zealand

"I don't think you should kill them, it is so wrong. I don't see the problem with them. Even though they are eating other birds I still think it's wrong to kill them."

Becky, 8, Wales

"I have LOADS of parakeets in my area and I see them every day. I think they are amazingly beautiful and they bring a touch of the exotic to the gloomy old UK!!! I don't think it's right to make it legal to shoot them!!!"

Mominah, 13, London, England

"We harm nature, wildlife etc... but no-one tries to kill us!!"

Isobel, 13, Scotland

"I have three parakeets come to my garden. They are very shy and timid but I have never had a problem with them."

Caitlin, 14, Oxford, England

"I think that parakeets are not a big problem because they don't harm you. Me and my brother were going to our auntie's house when he saw a parakeet."

Rose, 11, London, England

"I don't understand why people would want to kill these birds. Although I know what harm they're doing, they came here and they obviously don't want to go back."

Tia, 10, Derby, England

"I haven't seen one yet and personally I think they are cute. But I can understand the problem that has occurred."

Grace, 9, Somerset, England

"I don't think it's acceptable to kill ANY animal. People need to learn some respect. They don't understand that they have lives just like ours. They are only different in appearance."

Richard, 11, Maidstone, England

"They haven't affected me but you shouldn't kill them otherwise they'll become extinct. You should put food to attract them to a proper bird sanctuary or something so they can have a happy life and not annoy people."

Amy, 12, England

"I don't see them as a problem, and I think it is unfair killing them!! They may be harmful to wildlife, but humans are much more damaging."

Alice, 12, Essex, England

"I think it's wrong that parakeets are allowed to be killed. I have a green one and I would never kill him."

Ella, 11, Nottingham, England

"I've never seen a wild one! But my sister's friend has two pet parakeets called Ernie and Percy - I think they're adorable!"

Hannah, 13, Shropshire, England

"We see lots of parrots in London and we feed them. We think they are lovely and it should be against the law to kill them. Pigeons are the biggest nuisance."

Grace, 10, London, England

"Well, I think that it's not a problem because I've got a pair of budgies, which are also known as parakeets and they're not a problem to me. I think it is bad to KILL birds, its not their fault that they're in England or Scotland. I don't think you should take a life of a living creature."

Ivan, 10, Scotland

"Parakeets don't bother me. I think they are very pretty and it is mean to kill them!"

Caragh, 11, Guildford, England

"I don't think these birds should cause a problem for anyone. If crops are being destroyed then people should try to protect them. These birds are living creatures and are not a problem!"
