Game review: Horrible Histories Ruthless Romans

Horrible histories
Genre

Minigame/puzzle

Format reviewed

Nintendo Wii

Plot

Do you have what it takes to become the most ruthless Roman of all?

This game is based on the Horrible Histories books created by author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown.

You are a young gladiator called Rassimus who is making his way through Rome.

Ore meets Terry Deary

He is looking for his freedom - which you earn through playing mini-games like reading a book, talking to people or doing certain quests.

You have to complete a quiz about the Romans and three minigames to move up a level. You also have to fight in the Coliseum.

Fun

The minigames in this game are fun. The quizzes aren't so fun though, because you have to read a book to find out all the answers so you can often end up guessing if you're not patient enough!

You also have to complete a quiz to move up to the next level.

You end up learning quite a bit about history which should help at school!

Playability

The controls are simple, although it would be easier if you could use a nunchuk on the Wii because the little control pad at the top of the remote can get quite frustrating. You can play with up to three friends which is good.

Graphics

The graphics in this game aren't the best but the game play makes up for it.

Difficulty

The game isn't that hard. Only the quizzes are tough, and sometimes you might get lost finding your way around Rome.

Hit or miss?

If you're just a normal game player, it probably just is a hit by the skin of its teeth.

But if you're a fan of the books and the TV programme it might be right up your street.
