Alonso drives to pole in Hungary

Fernando Alonso

Spain's Fernando Alonso will start the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position after a thrilling qualifying session.

The Renault driver was in top form on Saturday and will begin Sunday's race ahead of Red Bull pair Sebastien Vettel in second and Mark Webber in third.

Lewis Hamilton's improving season continued as he steered his McLaren car to fourth place on the grid.

But things weren't so good for Brawn's Jenson Button who could only finish the session eighth fastest.

The final part of the qualifying session was delayed after a really nasty looking crash for Ferrari driver Felipe Massa.

It appeared that Massa was struck on the head by a piece of another driver's car, and was unable to keep his own car on the road.

He crashed into a tyre wall at high speed and needed to be taken to hospital by helicopter. Massa was talking when he left for hospital and was able to move his arms.
