Are 3D films worth the money?

Guinea pig stars in G Force

Have you ever seen a movie in 3D?

This year a lot of films have used the technology but with ticket prices costing around £2 more than standard movies, are they worth the extra cash?

Cinema bosses believe they are - and say they have to raise prices to pay for expensive equipment to show 3D films.

But others disagree and say they're just not worth the money.

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

Your comments

"You bet they are."

Freya, 8, UK

"I've seen one 3D film but there weren't very many parts where it was 3D. Therefore it was not really worth the extra money. Disappointing."

Cathy, 12, England

"Sometimes they are worth the money when the cinema has well-made 3D glasses. But if the cinema has poorly made ones that fall off and get in the way, you can't enjoy the film."

Miranda, 9, Glasgow, Scotland

"I think they are worth the extra money as at the Printworks in Manchester they are only two pounds more."

Rebecca, 12, Manchester, England

"Yes, I've seen a 3D movie. I've seen Madagascar. But I don't think animated 3D films are as good as ones with real people in it!! You don't get what you pay four I think."

Bethan, 10, Cairo, Egypt

"I think that they should charge extra for them but maybe they should do a rota so that if you have 3D glasses with you that then you only pay the price of how much it would be for a normal 2D movie. I love 3D movies but now have about eight pairs of 3D glasses at home which aren't being used."

Nads, 12, Birmingham, England

"It depends on the film. Some are really amazing in 3D, others aren't. I would still pay the extra though."

Sophie, 12, Worcester, England

"3D films aren't worth the money as most of them don't work if they aren't done properly."

Jazz, 14, Torquay, England

"I think that some 3D are good but not all of them. I would pay extra money to see a movie in 3D. It's worth it."

Laura, 13, Randalstown, England

"I like 3D films but the problem is that it doesn't feel 3D, only some objects come out, not the characters, so it's kind of a rip off."

Cree, 13, East Sussex, England

"They are way better! You only have to pay a bit more and it feels like you're in the movie!"

Zara, 12, London, England

"At our cinema once you watch one 3D film you get to keep the glasses but when you watch another one you have to buy more glasses!"

Estella, 11, Berkshire, England

"3D movies are very good I think it is fair that they charge extra."

John, 10, Birmingham, England

"Films are so much better in 3D. You actually feel like you are in the movie!"

Zoe, 12, Manchester, England

"I think films are better in 3D, I enjoy them more and will look forward to the next film coming out in 3D."

Chloe, 10, Essex, England

"I think it's great but I think as it's more popular than 2D films the cost should only be around £1 extra! I saw Ice Age, it's really good but not many things came into the audience."

Jenny, 12, Surrey, England

"I love 3D movies. They are very cool!"

Lucy, 6, Liverpool, England

"I think 3D movies are cool, but the glasses are a pain and £2 is too much money. I think it should be 50p extra."

Holly, 11, Hertfordshire, England

"I think 3D films are more enjoyable when you watch them with 3D."

Lizzie, 13, Nottingham, England

"I sometimes think they are worth it but a lot of the time hardly any of the film is in 3D."

Robbie, 10, Scotland

"Of course they are!! Coraline is now one of my favourite films now that I've seen it in 3D. 3D adds to the detail and makes the film more thrilling. I'd choose 3D any day to normal films!!!"

Holly, 9, Bristol, England

"You can see 3D films for only a little bit more and I think you get more experience from them than ordinary films. They should bring out 3D films on DVD and put special 3D glasses in the case."

Helena, 11, Nottingham, England

"I think 3D films are worth it if they really are 3D and the characters come out of the screen at you."

Samantha, 14, England

"I think 3D films are worth the money because you can see the film and feel more excited because it feels like you are in the film."

Rosa, 9, Yorkshire, England

"Well it's okay but I think the 3D glasses should be an extra £1. But I love the idea of 3D glasses so please don't make them stop!!!"

Sophie, 9, Buckinghamshire, England

"They are a waste of money cos you can spend the money on sweets and other food."

Kelly Ann, 13, Cambridge, England

"I think 3D movies are a waste of time and money because you don't need to see it in 3D, you just want to see the movie. Anyway, it's far too much trouble putting 3D glasses on."

Amy, 12, Worcestershire, England

"I love 3D films such as Bolt or Monsters Vs Aliens but it would be much better if they could cost less."

Rebecca, 12, Scotland

"I haven't seen a 3D film yet but I think it sounds good to me."

Molly, 8, Plymouth, England

"I went to see Ice Age 3 in 3D but I felt it was a letdown because there weren't enough parts that popped out at you which is one of the main reasons that I go to see them."

Harim, 12, Bradford, England

"3D movies are awesome! What's £2 for an awesome experience? It's worth the money."

Benji, 11, Kent, England

"I watched the Jonas Brothers 3D concert but it hardly had any 3D bits in it so I was pretty disappointed."

Rebecca, 11, Scotland

Tia, 12, London, England

"I love 3D films, it makes the film more exciting!"

Emily-Kate, 13, Leicestershire, England

"I really hate 3D films because the films don't have enough effects."

Muneer, 13, Leicester, England

"3D films are really cool and make the film seem much more real and they do cost a lot of money but I don't think they cost too much because they are really good!"

Jasmine, 13, UK

"I don't think that they are worth the extra money because only part of the movie is in 3D, and besides, I still like 2D films as much as they have loud music and special effects."

Tom, 12, Hampshire, England

"I've seen a movie in 3D. It was brilliant."

Kate, 10, Scotland

"I think 3D films are worth the money. I went to see a movie in 3D and I thought it was really cool and really enjoyable."

Alex, 12, Staffordshire, England

"I think paying more money is worth it because it is more interesting watching films in 3D. But in the end it's really up to you."

Naima, 12, Bristol, England

"I like them but they can be a waste of money."

Lauren, 9, Kent, England

"I think a good film in 3D is worth the money. For example, Ice Age 3 was great in 3D and probably wouldn't be as good normally."

Hayat, 13, London, England

"3D movies are good treats and cost more because you need to pay to get the glasses as well."

Purnima, 10, London, England

"They are good but not brilliant and they should only be a little bit extra like £1."

Tia, 11, Berkshire, England

"I think that Ice Age 3 is the best 3D film."

"Personally I hate 3D films but for those who like them, the price should be the same as the normal film."

Josh, 10, Somerset, England

"It's a waste of money seeing films in 3D because why should you pay £2 more for glasses that do not fit?!"

Robin, 12, London, England

"No they are not worth the money. I wear glasses so it would be a hassle to put on 3D glasses on top of my glasses. Plus I would look stupid."

Lewis, 14, Manchester, England

"I don't really like watching things in 3D but most people like 3D movies. It's not a waste of money if you like it but it is a waste of money if you don't particularly like it."

Sophie, 9, Chester, England

"I think 3D films are great! I saw one today, Ice Age 3. I really do think it's worth the money. Maybe slightly cheaper though."

Rhian, 11, Hove, England

"I think 3D is brilliant because you feel like you're actually in the film with the movie characters."

Izzy, 11, Oxfordshire, England

"I think 3D films are really worth paying more for because it's like everything is popping up at you and sometimes it is quite a surprise."

Nicholas, 9, Devon, England

"Normal films cost a fortune anyway maybe 3D films should cost £2 more at the most."

Alfie, 10, Hampshire, England

"I think they're good but they cost more money than they should. They should only be about £1 more."

Scott, 9, London, England

"3D films are really annoying if you wear glasses because you have to wear two pairs."

Sandra, 10, York, England

"I think it's a waste of money to watch a film in 3D because I watched Ice Age 3 in 2-D and I still thought it was good."

Hannah, 11, Middlesex, England

"I went with my friend one day to see Ice Age 3 in 3D. I was very excited because this was the first ever film I was going to see in 3D. Sadly it was a disappointment because it hardly had any 3D bits in it. In the end me and my friend took the 3D glasses off because it was a waste of time!!"

Rachael, 10, London, England

"I've recently been to see Ice Age 3 with my class and I think it was worth it."

Bethany, 14, Southampton, England

"I think they are worth the money because they are fun and scarier than normal films."

Lauren, 11, England

"I think 3D films are worth it if they are the same price - they are at the cinema I go to. The 3D makes it look better, even if things don't jump out at you and it's very subtle."

Chloe, 14, Kent, England

"It's great if the film is great. Coraline was good 3D but the film wasn't that good."

"I think 3D films are worth the money because you can really be absorbed by the amazing 3D technology."

Michael, 12, London, England

"3D films aren't good as they are more 3D inwards, as in looking into the film, not the 3D actually popping out at you which is much better."

Cath, 14, Tyne and Wear, England

Lauren, 11, West Sussex, England

"I think that you should be able to bring your own 3D glasses then get in for the normal price."

"I think they are a waste of money because there aren't a lot of bits in there that are 3D and they should be the same price as the normal 2D films."

Devon, 12, Hampshire, England

"If you really can't watch the film without it being in 3-D, then it's okay and worth the money, but if it's just the adverts, then there's no need. I don't really like watching things in 3D. I prefer the monsters and scares to remain safely behind the screen!"

"I think you should pay extra for 3D but only a small amount not loads."

Ellie, 12, Essex, England

"Yeah I love them!!! I have seen Bolt, Monsters Vs Aliens, Ice Age 3, and the Jonas film, all in 3D! They rock and they are different!!! I want ALL films to be in 3D ! Only downside is they cost more money to see."

Sarah, 12, Merseyside, England

"My mum has a bad eye and the 3D doesn't work for her. I think they should do movies in both 3D and 2D and let the public choose which they see."

Milly, 13, Oldham, England

"Yes, they are cool."

Skipper, 12, Blackpool, England

"I think 3D is OK, but the Imax is LOADS better!"

Lola-Rae, 10, London, England

"Some films are worth it. I suppose it depends on if it's a remix of a well-known film or not. And how much of the film is in 3D."

Hannah, 11, Hampshire, England

"I don't really like 3D films. They don't make the movie much better. In fact, they are much less realistic and the glasses are so uncomfortable."

Cher, 13, Hong Kong

"They are worth the extra money."

Stephan, 10, Scotland

"I think we should have 3D films. But I don't think it should be £2 more because £2 is a lot of money. And it is just like a normal film but with some more features."

Lucykate, 9, Southend, England

"The main storyline would still be the same but it depends on how much 3D there is in the movie because if there is only a small amount then it's not really worth the money. If the movie has quite a lot of 3D in it then it is worth spending a little extra for the movie experience. Also the glasses are uncomfortable and they look a bit silly."

Georgie, 13, Leeds, England

"I went to see Coraline in 3D and the adverts are more 3D than the actual film. You pay a lot of money for nothing when it's easier to watch it normally."

Evan, 13, Kent, England

"I think 3D is good because it feels like you're there."

Alisha, 10, London, England

"I think it depends on what you go to see."

"I think 3D is rubbish because it doesn't change the picture that much and the story is still the same."

Mona, 12, Brussels, Belgium

"I think that films which are specifically designed to look good on 3D are worth paying extra for, but if it's just a regular film put into 3D for no real reason, it's probably not worth watching in 3D. You're better off not wasting your money and just watching it in 2D."

Izzi, 12, Essex, England

"I think they are worth it because the film seems more real."

Rhianne, 14, London, England

"I think that it depends weather the film has got a lot of 3D in it. In Ice Age 3 there was no point in getting 3D glasses because there was hardly any 3D in it. There is no point in paying the extra £2."

Drew, 9, London, England

"So worth the money. For £2 extra, it really enhances the movie experience! I have watched two 3D Films - my next one probably might be Ice Age 3 or G-Force."

Harry, 10, England

"When I went to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince we were told that it was in 3D. I was really excited because I expected it to be like that for the majority of the film and I thought it would make the experience even better. Though the film was excellent we only had the 3D experience for about 15 minutes at the beginning of the film. At the end I thought, was it really worth showing it in 3D?"

Erin, 14, Glasgow, Scotland

"I think 3D movies are incredible. £2 is hardly enough money to say that it's expensive. The movies in 3D look amazing and I don't think it matters what film it is!!!"

Oliver, 14, West Sussex, England

"I think that 3D films are worth the money because it's a change from normal 2D films and it's exciting. I like the cool 3D glasses and I can't wait till cinemas develop 4D films in Britain!"

Chloe, 12, Stockport, England

"I think 3D is so cool because it brings you into the film."

Hope, 11, West Sussex, England

"I think it's a waste of money as my family of five all paid £5 extra each for Harry Potter in 3D but they only did the first 12 minutes in 3D so we really wasted £25. A waste by far."

Ellen, 11, London, England

"I think it is better when it is not a scary film but an action film like G-Force or Monsters Vs Aliens."

Lydia, 11, Kent, England

"I think 3D films are amazing, especially Coraline, because I went to see that in 3D and it was worth the extra money."

Olivia, 12, England

"I think 3D films should not come out because on a normal TV in 3D it would not come out very well so it's a waste of money."

"I think that it depends on what film you're watching."

Ellie, 9, London, England

"It is not worth the money as it is easy to watch the film without all that hassle."

Tanisha, 11, London, England

"Yes. The people who make the films put a lot of effort into making them and they are really fun to watch."

Rosie, 10, Milton Keynes, England

"I don't think they're worth it because it's not even that good and the glasses don't fit. When I usually go to the cinema it costs £4 but when I go to watch a 3D film it costs £8 which is a lot. I think it should be just a extra £1 then it is worth it because it's not worth £4 extra."

Katie, 11, Preston, England

"The other day I went to the Imax to watch Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in 3D. They charged us an extra £2 for the first 12 minutes in 3D."

Tom, 10, Surrey, England

"I think it depends on the film you're seeing. I went to see Ice Age 3 in 3D and it had hardly any 3D in it but in some other films its definitely worth the extra cash."

Drew, 9, London, England

"I think it is worth the extra money, it's not that much and you get a better film and seats."

Mia, 8, Derby, England

"I think they should not have 3D glasses as they always fall off also it is not worth the money as it's just as good in 2D."

Cutie, 9, London, England

"I think that it is a good idea but the price is too expensive and people will become too picky about the films they go and see. Also to make these films worth the money there should be more 3D effects in the film."

Henry, 10, England

"I think that 3D films are worth the money because they are fun, have loads of cool things to see and it give it more of a sense of coolness."

Craig, 12, Wales

"I have never seen a 3D film but I have heard that it was worth your money and because it's more fun to watch and it makes you feel like you are there!"

James, 10, Sunderland, England

Branden, 9, Wales

"I think they are really good. I saw Monsters Vs Aliens in 3D. It was amazing and I am going to see G-Force in 3D the day it comes out. I am so excited!!"

Lydia, 11, Canterbury, England

"I think 3D films are good because the picture comes out of the screen."

Hannah, 9, London, England

"I think that 3D films are awesome but not worth all the money, films are £5 already."

Ieuan, 11, Wales

"Why should we pay £2 extra money just to see it in 3D? Might as well just see the normal version."

"They're not worth it and when the film comes out you can see it normally anyway."

Charlotte, 14, Leicestershire, England

"It's really not worth it."

Bethany, 8, Kent, England

"I think it is a waste of money because you can see the film for cheaper and it's the same film."

"I don't think they are worth the money. It is better and easier to watch it without the hassle of trying to fit on 3D glasses that don't usually fit!"

Adam, 12, West Midlands, England

"It depends on the film. Some are just gimmicky but some films that are scary, like Coraline, benefit from 3D."

Blake, 12, Berkshire, England
