Lightning delays shuttle launch

Space Shuttle Endeavour

The launch of the space shuttle Endeavour in America has been delayed after 11 lightning strikes hit an area near the launch pad.

Blast-off was postponed for 24 hours so experts could check to see whether the storm caused any damage.

The launch pad has a special system to stop lightning striking the shuttle or rocket boosters.

The shuttle's mission is to go to the international space station and help build a special laboratory.

Seven crew members will be on board Endeavour and they're planning five space walks.

Two attempts to launch the shuttle in June were stopped after an important gas line was found to have a leak.

The visit to the space station will make it really crowded.

The extra crew will bring the total number of astronauts to 13 which is a record for the station.
