I moved to the other side of the world

Press Packer Joe who moved to New Zealand with his family

Press Packer Joe recently moved to New Zealand with his family.

Here's he explains how he felt about to moving to the other side of the world:

"Five months ago I moved with my family to New Zealand because my dad got a new job in Christchurch.

Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island of New Zealand.

When my parents told me we were moving to the other side of the world I felt sad because I was leaving my friends and family and the place I had grown up.

A bit scared

And I felt a bit scared because I didn't know what to expect but also really excited as it was a huge adventure.

I had never been to New Zealand before and didn't know a lot about it, so I did some research on the internet including finding out about earthquakes!

I found a website which lists when earthquakes happen in New Zealand - quite often really!

One week before we were to leave a huge lorry with a container on the back came and took all our furniture so it could be sent to New Zealand.

They took everything out of the house and it looked very different and empty!

Saying goodbye

On the last day of school before I left one of my friends brought a cake in and they all said goodbye.

I was a little bit upset to say goodbye but I knew that I had to go.

The day that I left I was quite upset because I'd never moved house before and my grandparents came to wave us off.

We flew to New Zealand - it is a really long way from the UK but luckily when we got on the plane it was really cool because they had TV's on the back of every seat!

As New Zealand is so far we stopped off in Hong Kong and stayed in a fancy hotel. Then we had to fly again to Christchurch via Auckland.

New home

And now I am in Christchurch, New Zealand and I am really enjoying my new life!

I do miss my friends and family but e-mail them and talk to my grandparents on the phone or by video on the computer at least once a week.

I settled into my new school really quickly and made friends quickly too - probably because I went on camp with my year group two days after I started school which was really cool!

The best thing about New Zealand is being close to the sea and the mountains. We're off skiing next week!

If you ever move abroad don't worry too much because it's a great adventure!"
