I'm one of the best Scrabble players in the UK

Jessica at the Scrabble Championships

Press Packer Jessica is so good at playing Scrabble that she took on the best players in the country in a tournament.

Here's her story:

"I was one of 40 players competing in the National Scrabble Championships Regional Final.

Family event

Me, my mum and my dad had all made it to the regional event. On the way there we discussed the possibility of all three of us going into the final round.

Hopefully we wouldn't have to play each other!

I began playing Scrabble on the Internet Scrabble Club (ISC) six years ago when I was just seven years old.

Early starter

Shortly after I began attending the London Scrabble League Sunday Drives and was competing in tournaments by the time I was eight.

Scrabble is a game that you need to practise, and need to know your words whether they be two, three, sevens or eight letters long!

I get lots of practice on the ISC, so I had hoped to achieve a higher position than in the past two years at the regionals, but I started badly.

I do not like losing very much.

Change of luck

Three straight defeats put me in low spirits, but my luck changed dramatically after lunch.

I played a nine-letter word, ENAMOURED. I was on three wins and 20th place going into the final seventh round. I needed a big win to get me a qualifying spot.

I managed to win a tense match to finish 15th.

Not enough to gain a semi-final spot but enough to increase my national rating to 157, which I'm really proud of!

There's always next year... and always other tournaments!"
