Boy hurt in park lightning strike

A teenager is in hospital after being struck by lightning in Birmingham on Saturday.

The 16-year-old was playing cricket when a storm hit and he took shelter under a tree where he was struck by lightning.

The boy is now in hospital in a serious condition. Five other boys are also being treated for injuries.

The Park keeper, Vasan Maniam, said it had been raining heavily when the lightning struck.

He said: "I think the boys had been playing cricket and then were standing under a tree, sheltering from the rain."

Experts say lightning takes the easiest route to the ground and if you are looking for shelter in a storm it's best to try and avoid tall objects such as isolated trees.
