Pets v Vets - does your pet have a problem?

Pet rabbit in carry box

Lots of pets are at risk of catching diseases because their owners don't have enough money to pay for vaccinations.

So vets are trying to get pet-owners to protect their pets from illness by getting the jabs they need.

But some pets don't like going to the vets - and some can put up quite a fight when you try and get them in a carry box.

Does your pet protest about a trip to the vets? Or is it really well behaved?

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

"With my cat it takes three people to get her in the cat basket. One to hold the head, one for the box and the other to push her in! But no-one escapes without getting bitten."

Dylan, 11, Miskin, Wales

"No-one likes going to the doctors, and it's the same with animals and the vets. I think that lowering the price of injections is a fab idea!"

Emily, 13, Leicestershire

"My dog once had to go to the vet and the only way to get there was in my dad's van. Now she never goes in his van anymore because she thinks she's going to the vet!"

Catherine, 12, Kerry, Ireland

"No my pet kitten does not have any problems."

Emily, 11, Nottingham, England

"My pet dog likes to bite her claws and once pulled one of her nails out of her claw and had to go to the vet. Then she tried to run away from me but I got her to the vet."

Jessica, 9, Sheffield, England

"My dog Rio is a golden retriever. When he needs to go to the vet he does tend to wriggle away to the door but he doesn't do that anymore he is calmer than he used to be."

Katie, 13, Wales

"In the recession no-one can afford to give pets vaccinations, so surely humans should come first or they should be made cheaper. Who agrees with me?"

Billy, 12, Florida, USA

"Yes! This is a big problem for me and my hamster. I hate the vet."

Teo, 12, London, England

"One of my cats Shelby runs away. It takes her about 10 mins to get her in the carrier. The other cat, Indie just goes in."

Naithan, 11, Newcastle, England

"My cat wails all the way to the vets but he loves the attention. The vets thought he had a heart murmur but it turned out he was just purring because he liked the vet. My other cats don't like the vet though and Miffy walked over the computer and weed in her box."

Jasmine, 14, West Sussex, England

"My dog attacks the vet!!"

Katie, 12, Barnsley, England

"My dog, Cassie, seems alright but she hardly has any problems. My snake and guinea pigs have never been the to the vet yet and we have had them for a couple of months!"

Mollie, 11, Liverpool, England

"My cats get nervous about going to the vet, my current oldest cat Toby is more scared of the journey there though. He meows constantly and presses his head against the roof of his cat carrier as if to try to escape.

For our barn cats, the vet comes to see them which is a lot better than attempting to catch them and take them in. One of our dogs hates the vet and has to be muzzled, while the other seems to not care less what the vet does to him.

Our horses are usually alright around the vet, though one of them is so scared she has to be sedated just for a check over."

Chloe, 13, Northern Ireland

"My dog hates it at the vets and chews all the equipment."

Jessica, 11, Lincoln, England

"My dog is fine, but very fidgety when we go to the vet."

Sophie, 13, Eastbourne, England

Georgia, 10, Harrogate, England

"Some of my dog's hairs come out on the floor and he pants really loud, it's so embarrassing."

Lowri, 11, Wales

"My dog has the runs when he sees the vet and gets very scared."

Nickie, 11, Wales

"My cat keeps jumping off the vet's table and one time managed to escape the dentist."

"My dog tries to bite the vet. He has to sedate her just to get close enough."

Jenny, 11, Surrey, England

"It's OK when my pets go to the vets."

Daena, 9, Cardiff, Wales

"My dogs are good as gold because they can meet other dogs and get treats."

Brittany, 8, London, England

"My dog has a problem with the vet, he doesn't like going so every time we go he pulls back to the car."

"My dog is a puppy still and he is good when he is at home. He has had e-coli and nearly died and whenever we go to the vets he gets so excited and jumpy we can't handle it!!

Megan, 11, Buckinghamshire, England

"My cat is fine, because he has had his vaccinations."

Charlotte, 12, Kent, England

"My dog had a problem with its leg and even to make an appointment at the vets was expensive. When I got there they told me that there was nothing they could do. If I wanted them to have a proper look at it then it would cost just under £1,000 which is ridiculous."

Frankie, 12, Manchester, England

"It's hard to get my cats in the box and out again on the way to the vets. And when they're in it they rip up the paper."

Bradlee, 11, Worcestershire, England

Hannah, 9, England

"My pet hamster doesn't have a clue what's happening so he hides in his tube all squished up and probably saying: 'I'm a hamster, get me out of here!'."

Jake, 12, Cardiff, Wales

"My dog LOVES the vet! If we ever walk past the vet's, he tries to run in! We never have any problems at the vets."

Antony, 11, Cheshire, England

"My hamster Miley, who passed away last year, had a problem - she kept biting everybody's fingers and got a diseases of some sort and died."

Cairenn, 10, Northern Ireland

"If people can't pay then why get a pet?"

Kyla, 9, Devon, UK

"My seven-year-old labrador has eczema. At this time of the year it is quite bad so he is on some tablets and medicines. When a pet isn't vaccinated it isn't their fault, it is the owners'. If they loved and cared for them then they would spend the money on getting them vaccinated no matter what."

Abbey, 8, Doncaster, England

"My dog hates going to the vets, because when he went last time the vet cut his nails, and he cut one of the veins by accident. Now he hates going. Whenever we take him, we have to pull him out of the car into the vets! I'm sure he will get better at going to the vets soon!"

Kelly, 12, Dorset, England

"I have a rabbit called Sushi. She is a dwarf lop and her breed was made to show. Therefore she has teeth problems. Every 8-10 weeks we spend around £80 to file them down. Georgia, 10, Kent, England

"My dog Inez has a back problem which gives her pains if she strains her back. She had surgery recently, but is recovering really well! She is also very cheeky as she does these puppy dog eyes at the vets one-by-one so they each give her a dog biscuit from the counter! Well it works!"

Emmi, 12, Prague, Czech Republic

"My pets don't have any troubles because my vet loves them and also they give them treats when they are good. I have two horses and they often need to go to vet to help them. I want to be a vet when I am older so I do hope that animals don't have a problem with me. I want the animals to see me as a friend."
