Last Titanic survivor dies

Millvina Dean

The last survivor of the sinking of the Titanic has died, aged 97.

Millvina Dean was just nine weeks old when the Titanic, which was thought to be unsinkable, sank after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic in 1912.

Her family were on board the massive ship during its first trip from Southampton to America in the hope of making a new life for themselves there.

Millvina's father was one of the 1,517 people who died in the disaster, but her mother and brother both survived.

After they were rescued they returned to Southampton, where Millvina spent most of the rest of her life.

Although she was too young to remember anything about what happened on the Titanic, she said it had had a massive impact on her life.

"If it hadn't been for the ship going down, I'd be an American leading an ordinary American life," she said.
