Shearer is the new Newcastle boss

Alan Shearer

Newcastle United's legendary former striker Alan Shearer has taken on the challenge of saving the club from relegation as the new team manager.

But it won't be easy - the Magpies are third from the bottom of the Premier League and he's got just eight games left to get them out of the drop zone.

Newcastle have had a troubled season so far with lots of changes - Shearer is their fourth manager in a year!

Now fans will be hoping he can get a weekend win for them against Chelsea.

Speaking to the BBC Shearer said: "It's a club I love and I don't want them to go down. I'll do everything I can to stop that.

"There are very, very good players that are just lacking in confidence and it's up to myself and the rest of the staff to get the best out of them."

Multiple managers

Newcastle started the season with Kevin Keegan in charge, but he quit in September to be replaced by Joe Kinnear, who then had heart surgery.

Chris Hughton then stepped into the boss' shoes as a temporary manager at St James' Park, but since then the Magpies have slipped further and further down the table.

Now fans will have high hopes for Shearer, who scored 206 goals for the club during his 10 years there.

He retired as a player in 2006, but always said he wanted to return as the manager one day.
