Nine-man United beaten by Fulham

Wayne Rooney

Manchester United's hopes of winning the title took a blow after they were beaten 2-0 at Fulham on Saturday.

The Reds finished with just nine men, after Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney were both sent off.

Scholes was shown the red card for handling Bobby Zamora's header. Danny Murphy scored a penalty and then Zoltan Gera made it two for Fulham.

A frustrated Rooney was sent off a few minutes later after he threw the ball away after the second goal.

Elsewhere, Chelsea missed the chance to move to within a point of the championship leaders, losing 1-0 to Spurs.

Relegation battle

Saturday's Premier League results:
Blackburn 1-1 West Ham
Portsmouth 2-1 Everton
West Brom 1-1 Bolton
There was bad news for Newcastle United who slipped further into the relegation zone after being beaten 3-1 by Arsenal.

But there was good news for Stoke, where Ryan Shawcross' 84th minute goal was enough to pull his team out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough.
