Obamas to grow own vegetables

President Obama's wife Michelle has helped dig the first ever fruit and veg patch at her new home, the White House.

The First Lady, helped by a group of school pupils, built a kitchen garden which will help feed the Obama family and official visitors.

Talking about her children Malia and Sasha, she said: "My girls like vegetables more if they taste good."

The L-shaped garden near the fountain on the south lawn will include spinach, carrots, lettuce and blackberries.

There will also be a beehive, which Mrs Obama hopes will provide the First family, staff and visitors with their own White House honey.

Harvest

The year 6 students who helped Mrs Obama plant the produce will be back to harvest the fruit and vegetables next year.

As well as providing fresh fruit and veg for the Obamas, some crops will be donated to a charity soup kitchen near the White House where Mrs Obama recently helped serve lunch.
