Ronaldo blasts United to victory

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his goal

Ronaldo smashed in an amazing free-kick to send Manchester United eight points clear in the Premier League.

Ronaldo's strike earned United a 2-1 win at home to Blackburn Rovers, who became the first team to score a goal against United since November 2008.

Roque Santa Cruz slid in that goal for Rovers, after Wayne Rooney had given the home side the lead.

United fans will now be hoping their big rivals Manchester City will help them out against Liverpool on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday Chelsea grabbed a crucial win in the Premier League, after a 1-0 win away to Aston Villa.

Nicolas Anelka netted the only goal in the first half, after some great play from Frank Lampard, to send Chelsea above Villa in the table.

Chelsea move up to third place in the league, two points behind Liverpool and seven short of Manchester United.

The most exciting match of the day may have been at Stoke, where Portsmouth battled back for a 2-2 draw.

Neither side looked like scoring for most of the match, but then Pompey netted an opening goal after 75 minutes when Niko Kranjcar slid the ball home.

Two quick goals for Stoke's James Beattie - one of them a penalty - then gave Stoke the lead, but a deflected Hermann Hreidarsson shot handed Portsmouth a well deserved point.

West Ham hammered

Two early goals for Bolton gave them all three points in a 2-1 win at home to West Ham, although the Hammers chased hard for an equaliser.

Matt Taylor and Kevin Davies were on target for Bolton before Scott Parker's goal made it a nervous finish for the home fans.
