Back to school after Australia fires

Pupils returning to school in Australia after the devastating bush fires

Children in Australia are starting to return to school for the first time since bushfires swept across the country causing widespread devastation.

Alexandra Primary School, in the state of Victoria, reopened on Monday.

As well as their own pupils, staff also welcomed children from the towns of Kinglake, Marysville and Flowerdale, which were all destroyed in the blazes.

Lots of children affected by the fires are pleased to be back in class, saying they want life to get back to normal.

At least 200 people are known to have died in the wild fires, which have destroyed more than 1,800 homes and left about 7,500 people homeless.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced a national day of mourning, which will be held on Sunday, for all the victims of the fires.

Meanwhile, emergency services are still battling to control at least eight fires which are burning in the state of Victoria.

Man arrested

So far, police have arrested one man - Brendan Sokaluk - who they suspect of starting fires in Victoria.

He's been charged with starting a fire on purpose, and causing the death of someone by starting a fire.
