Liverpool beat Pompey to go top

Liverpool's Fernando Torres

A dramatic late header from Fernando Torres sealed Liverpool's 3-2 win over Portsmouth and boosted them back to the top of the Premier League.

Portsmouth opened the scoring and were holding their own against the Reds, but at 2-2 and with just five minutes left to play Torres powered home the winner.

Earlier, Aston Villa moved up to third place in the table thanks to a 2-0 win away at Blackburn Rovers.

The result also set a new Villa record of seven league away wins in a row.

It means Martin O'Neill's side swap places with Chelsea, who were held to a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge by Hull.

Saturday's other results
Manchester United's Shay Given on his debut for the club, against Middlesbrough
Sunderland 2-0 Stoke
Wigan 0-0 Fulham
Elsewhere, Jo scored two goals on his debut for Everton, helping them to a comfortable 3-0 home win over Bolton.

And Newcastle United scored a vital three points with a 3-2 away win against West Bromwich Albion, who stay stuck at the bottom of the table.

They share that dubious honour with Middlesbrough who lost 1-0 to Manchester City, piling the pressure on manager Gareth Southgate.

Craig Bellamy scored the winner, but goalie Shay Given also played his part in a fantastic debut for the club, which included saving four shots from Middlesbrough's Afonso Alves.
