All about Des

Des

Des joined the Sportsround team in 2008, as our resident sports-geek and all round fact fan.

MY TEAM

MY FAVOURITE SPORT

There are too many to choose from! I've always been a mad football fan and growing up I also loved playing tennis. I wasn't anywhere near good enough to be the next Andy Murray though! My other fave sport is snooker, and I once made a break of 40.

WORST SPORTING INJURY

I was playing footy after school on a wet day and the grass was really slippery. I slid in to get the ball and just kept sliding.

I couldn't stop and ended up crashing straight into the fence at the side of the pitch. The end result was that I broke my arm. The only good bit was I got to wear a cast and all my mates drew cool stuff on it!

HIGHEST SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT

I captained my primary school football team which I was really proud about. I also caught the ball whilst in the crowd at a one-day cricket match.

ARMCHAIR FAN OR OUT ON THE TERRACES?

I love watching sport on the telly, especially when they can give you so many different camera angles and replays. It's particularly good when big events like the World Cup or Olympics are on as you don't miss any of the action.

I have to say though, nothing beats getting out there and watching sport in person. The live atmosphere is brilliant, and you get to see everything in the flesh. Plus the banter you get in the crowd is great fun!

MOST EMBARRASSING SPORTING MOMENT

I was taking part in my school cross-country race and just as I was coming down the home straight I sneezed.

This would have been bad enough but the sneeze was so massive it caused me to lose my balance and fall over, landing in a huge puddle. It took me a long time to live that one down!

EVENT YOU'RE MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2009

The Ashes - no doubt about it. After the last Ashes in England in 2005 I can't wait to see what happens when Australia visit again in the summer. If it's half as good as 2005 it will be an amazing series.

FAVE MUSIC

At the moment I'm really into Kings of Leon, Katy Perry and the Killers. Anything with a K really!

I like lots of different types of music, something with a bit of a beat that I can dance to. Although as anyone who knows me will tell you - my dancing is rubbish. In fact it's almost as bad as John Sergeant in Strictly!

FAVE TV PROGRAMME

Match of the Day, Harry Hill's TV Burp, X Factor.

YOUR HERO

Chris Hoy. He won three gold medals at one Olympic Games which is a truly awesome achievement.

I also had the pleasure of meeting him which was an honour as he is such a talented, yet humble guy. A true champion… and his thighs are bigger than tree trunks!

Watch Sportsround at 6.10pm on Friday on the CBBC Channel, and if you miss it (or really liked it the first time) you can catch it again at 8.15am on Saturday on BBC2.
