Pupils speak out about Prince Harry

A row's broken out after a newspaper published a video of Prince Harry using a racist word to describe a Pakistani member of his army platoon.

Harry said he used the word as a nickname, and didn't mean it as an insult.

The prince has said he's really sorry, but lots of people are still really angry.

But we want to know what YOU think about it all.

Perhaps you feel that racist words should never be used, and are really disappointed in Harry.

Or maybe you feel that Harry's made a mistake and said sorry, so we shouldn't be too hard on him.

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

Your comments

"I think that he shouldn't have said what he did, but if it were anyone else would there be the same amount of fuss? But he has admitted it was a mistake and has said sorry."

Catty, 12, Exeter, England

"So what if he is the Prince? It does not mean he has the right to insult someone just because he's from the Royal family."

Niya, 12, America

"It happened three years ago, so why are they bringing it up now?!"

Kaya, 13, Leeds, England

"It happened three years ago and the press must be really desperate to scratch up news from three years ago about Harry!"

Jonny, 14, Northumberland

"It's just not fair! If someone else said that they could have gone to court."

Muhammed, 12, Essex, England

"Come on guys, cut him a break, he did not mean to be racist, and, why bring it up now when there is so much else going on in the world?"

Saqib, 13, Grangetown, England

"It is totally unacceptable, and I don't think that an apology is good enough, otherwise anyone could go around being racist and just apologising and getting away with it. So it's unfair that just because he's the prince he gets away with it."

Nima, 14, London, England

"I think it's ridiculous. Harry is part of the royal family and is meant to be setting an example. I do agree that he is a good prince but that's just not acceptable."

Melissa, 11, Manchester, England

"I think that Prince Harry made a mistake and being a role model he should have been more careful, but he has apologised. I think we should move on."

Monisha, 11, London, England

"Prince Harry made a big mistake but now he has said sorry which is an apology."

Aysha, 8, London, England

"I don't think Prince Harry should have said what he said because if little children heard that on the news they could spread that racist word around and other children might say it."

Hassan, 8, Birmingham, England

"I think it's unfair because we all say things without thinking occasionally. People just have to learn to forgive and forget."

Alex, 11, County Durham, England

"I think that nobody should use racist language, but he is sorry and it was three years ago, so we should just move on and forgive him."

Ruby, 10, North Yorkshire, England

"What he said was horrible and he shouldn't have said it. He should have called him by his name."

Ashley, 9, Manchester, England

"It's stupid that it was three years ago and they've only just shown it."

Holly, 13, Derbyshire, England

"He should be told off because he's meant to set an example for others."

Rachael, 12, Norwich, England

"I think that it is horrid that someone who is in line for the throne should say things like that, but I think he is very sorry."

Bonnie, 11, London, England

"I don't think this is one of Harry's worst mistakes but it is still bad."

Albin, 11, Brighton, England

"I think they should punish him because if any other person said that they would get punished."

David, 13, Scotland

"Everyone is saying it's not fair. It is fair. He was racist and he can't just say sorry then be let off. He shouldn't be using words like that anyway!"

Mollie, 10, England

"Well, I think that Prince Harry's apology should be accepted because he didn't mean it in a nasty way to the people who he hurt. So accept it for what he has said."

Bethany, 9, England

"I think Prince Harry is very sorry for what he said and no more action should be taken. He did not intend to upset anyone. Anyway, from what I heard it was supposed to be a private family diary not something that was meant to be broadcast around the world. He has not let me down at all and is still someone I look up to and probably always will."

Phoebe, 10, Staffordshire, England

"It was wrong for him to do that but I think we should stop thinking about it. That was the past and is now the past. People just don't forget things!!!"

Lauren, 11, Staffordshire, England

"I think if this sort of behaviour is going on in the army it's got to be stopped. But Harry's case should be treated like anybody else's - after all he's only a person."

Poly, 12, Devon, England

"I think Prince Harry is really nasty to say something like that. If he comes out with remarks like that he won't get very far as a prince."

Mia, 11, Wales

"I don't think he should have said it but I think it was a mistake."

Katie, 8, Scotland

"I think that people are overreacting a bit. I understand that it can be really offensive to people but he didn't mean it as a racist remark. If anyone else had said it they would have been in trouble, but it's only been made big because he's a prince."

Charlotte, 11, Lincolnshire, England

"I think it was out of order to say a racist word to one of his colleagues but hopefully he has LEARNT his LESSON well. I still think there should be something done about it!!!"

Reannah, 10, Reading, England

"I think what he said was wrong, but it's unfair because he didn't mean to say it."

Agne, 10, London, England

"I think it's ridiculous. Young people are meant to be looking up to him, and what kind of an example is that to set? If he wasn't a prince, he wouldn't have the prime minister speaking on his behalf, and people would be disgusted. Why should he be excused just because of his royal status?"

Lara, 14, Belfast, Northern Ireland

"Talk about a fuss, everyone makes a little mistake occasionally and poor Harry just did his at the wrong time. If he says sorry and that it was a mistake then what's all the fuss about? The media are overreacting to a simple mistake everyone can make, even themselves."

Rebecca, 11, Lincoln, England

"I think everyone's overreacting. Yes, it was wrong. Yes, it was racist, but he's apologised and you can tell he is genuinely sorry. The only reason it's been made a big deal out of is because he's royalty. He's just a young lad. Let him act like everyone else."

Becky, 14, Cheshire, England

"I feel differently now. I mean, someone who's meant to be loyal and kind has just been racist."

Edith, 10, London, England

"I don't think it's fair. He didn't mean to be racist. Why don't people just get over it? He didn't mean it in a mean way."

Bridget, 11, Newcastle, England

"A complete and utter overreaction! He didn't mean it as an insult, and he was mates with the guy, and I think that everyone has completely overreacted - but racism is still bad."

Lizzie, 13, England

"I think that even though what Harry said was racist, he didn't mean to be insulting. It was a long time ago, anyway. Lots of people say things like that, not meaning to be hurtful, so he shouldn't be accused of being purposefully racist. He's apologised, so why can't people just leave it at that?"

Ellie, 11, North Yorkshire, England

"I think that we are creating too much fuss over this as the person to whom he spoke to has not tried to sue him (maybe because he's a prince). But still, if that person is not creating a fuss then I think we shouldn't either."

Tamara, 11, Essex, England

"I am a Pakistani, nearly my whole class is. What Prince Harry said was not a nice thing. He should be a better role model."

Irsah, 10, Nottingham, England

"I don't think we should keep mad at him because it could have just slipped out. I'm sure he didn't really mean it and he might have changed since then, so I forgive him."

Chaila, 12, Telford, England

"Well, I think he shouldn't have said that because young children might look up to him and think that it's alright to say the same thing and do it and call people names."

Danielle, 11, Fife, Scotland

"Well I think it's wrong because you shouldn't call someone that and it's offensive to call someone that."

Rayann, 10, Nottingham, England

"It was wrong for Harry to say that because he is supposed to be a role model for young people."

Conall, 10, Gloucestershire, England

"I think it's stupid because all of these people in jail can't just say sorry and be released so how can Prince Harry just say sorry and get away with it."

Lia, 12, Cornwall, England

"What I don't get is that they only decided to show it three years later; it is unfair, he is a good Prince and he never meant any harm."

Alan, 12, Birmingham, England

"It is a horrible word. I hate that things are different for the likes of the Royals."

Emersyn, 11, Midlands, England

"Racist remarks are completely unacceptable, but he is sorry, so we should try to forget it. But many of the people he insulted will be unable to forgive him."

Emily, 11, UK

"I know racism is bad, but he was just joking. And it was three years ago so why not give him another chance."

Sarah, 10, Essex, England

"I think Prince Harry is lucky, because if it was anyone else then they would have got a worse punishment."

Sebastian, 11, London, England

"I think it's really silly how it happened three years ago, but because all the newspapers are talking about it, it's suddenly a big issue."

Meg, 12, Bury, England

"I think Harry was extremely wrong, even if it was a nickname. But I think others should forgive him."

Chantelle, 10, Bradford, England

"I think it was awful what he said and I bet that if he wasn't royalty he would be punished. If it was anyone else they would not forgive them."

Caitlin, 9, London, England

"I think this is unfair on him because he didn't mean to be racist."

Lauren, 9, UK

"In my opinion, I think what he said was wrong. Even though he said it was a nickname, as a Pakistani myself, I would still find it offensive."

Zara, 13, Sheffield, England

"People say racist things all the time, just because he is a Royal it does not mean he is not human. Prince Harry should be able to live without the press on him all the time!"

Rosie, 11, London, England

"Silly little foolish boy, he should think before he talks. AND THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME! If it was someone else who wasn't royalty, they would be punished!"

Aysh, 15, Birmingham, England

"I think it is racist. He could have said anything else, there was absolutely no need for that word."

Zarafsha, 11, Doncaster, England

"I think that just because he's a part of the Royal family doesn't mean he should be treated any differently, whereas if someone else said something offensive they would be punished severely."

Amina, 12, London, England

"For goodness sake! It was three years ago and it was to a friend! Everyone seems to be forgetting this is the guy that MADE a charity for Aids orphans, spent his 18th birthday at a children's hospital trying to help awareness, fought for our country, and he says one thing on a video that was NOT made to be broadcast all over the internet and it was a joke about a friend and the friend didn't mind!!!!!!"

Rachel, 12, London, England

"He's only got away with it because he's a member of the Royal family, it's really unfair on everyone else!"

Mills, 12, Warwickshire, England

"It's rude I know, but it's just a mistake, everybody makes them. Just forgive him!"

Georgia, 10, Kent, England

"I think we should just leave it now. He has said sorry and they are going to forgive him."

Lara, 10, Somerset, England

"It isn't like other people Prince Harry's age never made any racist remarks and the only difference is that he's a well-known person."

Mo, 11, Sheffield, England

"I think he should know better, but now he has realised his mistakes he will think before speaking."

Yinka, 10, Reading, England

"I think Prince Harry should not have said what he said in the first place, but I believe he is truly sorry for it."

Emily, 9, Tyne and Wear, England

"I think that it was very rude of him as he is a role model to younger children."

Lucy, 10, Harrow, England

"I think that they have better stuff to worry about, rather than wasting time arguing over something said three years ago. He apologised and he didn't mean it that way so everyone should just drop it. It's stupid to keep on about it, and people are only making it worse."

Laura, 14, London, England

"I think Prince Harry shouldn't have said anything to the Pakistani in the first place. All of my friends are British Pakistanis and it hurt their feelings a lot."

Sakina, 10, Nottingham, England

"I think that what he did was wrong, no matter if it was a joke or who he is. I think that just because it was a friendly nickname, he should be punished."

Edie, 11, Southampton, England

"OK, so he shouldn't have said it but it wasn't as if he was using it in a bad way, he was referring to a friend. It's done now so people should get over it."

Katy, 15, Edinburgh, Scotland

"As a Muslim, the word that Harry used was very insulting but I think he never meant it."

Aaisha, 13, Middlesbrough, England

"I think everybody is over-reacting. Everybody makes mistakes, give him a break!"

Alice, 10, Oxfordshire, England

"It's disgraceful, because he's third in line for the throne."

Zoe, 14, Bristol, England

"I think Prince Harry didn't mean to be racist about the soldiers in the Army. He should be sorry for using that word, he shouldn't even say it, but I don't think he meant it."

Logan, 11, Motherwell, Scotland

"I didn't hear about this, but I think it is quite serious. An apology is really all you need (if you mean it)."

Amethyst, 9, Croydon, England

"I think that he shouldn't have said what he did. However, people are racist all the time! The press are just picking on him because he is a member of the Royal family."

Zoe, 10, Scotland

"He does not deserve to be given the benefit of the doubt - he has made LOTS of mistakes and he shouldn't be let off just because he is royalty."

Emma, 12, Gateshead, England

"I bet the guy wasn't even hurt at all. Being racist is bad, but only if you mean it."

Jack, 13, Buckinghamshire, England

"I think this is not fair on Harry."

Ellen, 11, Norwich, England

"I think that he should have known better because that is racist and he did know it."

Emma, 15, London, England

"I am really offended by this as my mother and father come from Pakistan. I hope that further action will be taken."

Jihan, 14, Chester, England

"I think the Prince was really bad and he shouldn't have said such a thing anyway."

Sara, 11, Accrington, England

"It's very unfair because he didn't mean to be racist. Also, if it was any other person, no-one would probably say anything, but just because he is the Prince everyone thinks it's the end of the world. I feel really sorry for him and for his family."

Lily, 12, Dorset, England

"People need to learn the difference between what's racist, what's rude and what's wrong. It was a bit rude, but we shouldn't keep going on about it."

Saffy, 10, Essex, England

"I think everyone should leave Prince Harry alone because that DIARY was personal and a part of his diary shouldn't have been published in a national newspaper anyway!!!!!!!!!"

Nikki, 15, Dorset, England

"I think that though what he said wasn't very nice, he didn't mean it to be racist, and it's just because he is royalty, people are over-reacting."

Keke, 13, Singapore

"This is another silly over-reaction. There are more important things in the world. Sure, Harry might have said this, but he's mature enough to not do it again."

Lola, 11, Torquay, England

"It was three years ago and he didn't mean to be offensive so there's no need for a row."

Jamie, 10, Bristol, England

"It wasn't nice for a Prince to make a video like that. But he really didn't mean it."

Kieran, 8, Dundee, Scotland

"I think that what Harry did was wrong and offensive, but he obviously didn't mean any harm by the term. I think that if any other solider had done this it would have been hushed up, but because it was someone famous the press are making it look like he is a severe racist. I think that the matter should be investigated, but it should not have been brought to the public's attention unless it needed to be."

Clare, 13, Belfast, Northern Ireland

"I think this is unfair on him because he didn't mean to be racist."

Pippa, 10, Essex, England

"I think it's a huge over-reaction. What he said was in the most matey way possible. It wasn't said in a racist manner and this is what caused so much racism in the first place. It seems like something to trigger an argument."

Laura, 15, Buckinghamshire, England

"I think racism is bad but he was being normal for once. He was just fooling around and it was three years ago. So, everyone, just cut him some slack."

Nathan, 13, Zurich, Switzerland

"I think people are just getting over the top about racism now! You can hardly say anything without it being said as racist. Obviously Harry didn't mean to say what he did in a horrible way, so I would just leave it at that."

Reuben, 14, Kent, England

"Very bad and an embarrassment."

Callum, 11, Birmingham, England
