Search on for escaped beaver

A tree on the River Tamar at Gunnislak allegedly damaged by an escaped beaver

The hunt is on for an escaped beaver which is chewing down trees in the south-west of England.

Beavers were wiped out in Britain back in the 16th Century, by hunters who trapped them to sell their fur.

Three beavers escaped from their home with a conservationist in Devon in October. Two were found shortly after.

But it's thought that the third, a male weighing about 38kg, is now taking down trees about 20 miles away near Gunnislake, Cornwall.

The animals have to keep chewing on wood to stop their teeth getting too long as their teeth never stop growing.

The beaver's owner Derek Gow has a special licence to keep 24 of the animals.

Mr Gow plans to catch the creature by using the scent of a female beaver to attract him to a trap.
