Premier League and European champions Man United have become the first British team to win the Club World Cup.

They beat the South American champions Liga de Quito 1-0 in Japan.

There should have been more goals because United played really well, but Quito goalkeeper Jose Cevallos made lots of good saves.

Wayne Rooney eventually sealed United's victory with a late goal, and was named the player of the tournament.

In the 73rd minute of the match on Sunday, Rooney took a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo and fired into the bottom corner of the goal.

United had been reduced to 10 men when defender Nemanja Vidic was sent off for lashing out with an elbow at Quito's Claudio Bieler.

Afterwards, Rooney said: "It was a very difficult game especially after going down to 10 men.

"I'm very happy to have scored, and for us to become the best club in the world is something we can be very proud of."

The tournament brought together the champion teams of all the different football confederations, including Europe, Asia and South America.
