Hope for stranded Thai tourists

Planes at Bangkok airport in Thailand

Some of the tourists stuck in Thailand after two airports were closed when protesters took control of them, could be on their way home soon.

Around 40 planes have taken off from Bangkok - without any passengers on board - and are headed to other airports to pick up stranded people.

Thousands of people have been stuck in Thailand for seven days since the protests at the airports started.

The protesters want the government in Thailand to resign.

As many as 100,000 people are trying to get out of the country, but the anti-government protests have closed the two main airports in Thailand.

Now a deal has been agreed to let 88 planes leave Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, although they will only be allowed to take people out of the country from airports hundreds of miles from Bangkok.

Some governments are arranging special flights to get their people home.

It's thought the protests are costing Thailand's holiday businesses as much as £50m a day, and it could see the number of people planning a holiday there drop by half in 2009.

But the people at the airport aren't the only ones protesting.

On Sunday thousands of people who think the government is doing a good job marched through Bangkok to show their support.
