Sportsround reveals young sports star finalists

Young Sports Personality of the Year - 2008

It's that time of year again when the BBC will reveal who has won its Young Sports Personality of the Year award.

Wayne Rooney, Andy Murray and Theo Walcott are just a few of the HUGE stars who have won the award in previous years.

Who is she? Wimbledon junior champion - she was the youngest player in the competition and her victory was the first in any singles event at Wimbledon since Annabel Croft's win in the girls' event in 1984.

What's she done?

  • The first British 13-year-old (boy or girl) ever to win an ITF International U18 tournament.
  • Gained her first senior ranking in 2008
  • Played as part of the main senior WTA Tour for the first time (in Luxembourg in October) after playing three senior events on the minor ITF circuit
  • The youngest British player to compete in the WTA Tour - won her first senior event in Sunderland on Nov 9th 2008

What's she done?

  • Double gold medalist in Beijing: 100m freestyle S6 and 400m freestyle S6 (also came 5th in the final of 50 metres S6) - competed in five events in total, also set British record in 50m fly
  • World record holder in 400m freestyle S6 (05:41:34) having broken the record both at the Paralympics and British Championships
  • Competed in four finals at the IPC World Championships in 2006 - her first international competition (best result was finishing 5th in 400m freestyle)
  • Has trained at British swimming's high performance centre in Swansea since she was 11 years old - the family moved from Walsall especially!

Who is he? Britain's youngest competitor in 2008 Beijing Olympics and youngest male athlete to ever represent Britain at a summer games

What's he done?

  • Reached the 2008 Olympic finals in both 10m synchro and individual platform competition coming 8th and 7th respectively
  • Winner of Men's 10m platform in European Championships 2008
  • Winner of 10m synchro platform at 2008 FINA Diving World Series in Sheffield and was second in individual 10m platform
  • Bronze medallist in 10m synchro at FINA Diving World Cup 2008
  • Silver in 10m platform and 3m springboard at 2008 World Junior Diving Championships
