After wildfires raged for a week in California, people there are now coming to terms with the damage caused by the flames.

The fires have died down, but fire fighters are still checking the burnt out areas for any hot spots that might light up again.

Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes to escape the fires.

And many of them are now returning home to find their homes damaged - or destroyed - by the flames.

More than 800 homes, ranging from multi-million dollar mansions, to smaller mobile homes, were destroyed.

No-one knows for sure what caused the fires, but it's thought they could have been started by people being careless - or even a bolt lightening.

No deaths were reported, but a state of emergency was declared in four areas around southern California, so officials can get more money to help those affected by the fires.
