Calzaghe boxes clever for big win

Joe Calzaghe fights Roy Jones Jnr

Joe Calzaghe put on a brilliant display of boxing to beat Roy Jones Jnr in New York and remain undefeated.

Things started badly for Calzaghe, as he was knocked to the ground in the first round when Jones caught him with a solid right-handed blow.

But Calzaghe recovered to dominate the fight, and has now fought 46 times without losing.

In the end Calzaghe was voted the winner by judges after 12 rounds, by a score of 118-109.

After the fight Calzaghe said: "Yes, I was hurt, he caught me with a good shot. But that's what being a champion is all about - when you're put down on the floor, you come back stronger."

Jones used to be one of the finest boxers around, but at 39 years old is no longer the force he used to be.

Statistics after the fight showed that Calzaghe threw twice as many punches as his opponent, and as the bout wore seemed to get stronger.

Before the fight Calzaghe had said he would retire after it, but now he could be considering carrying on a bit longer.
