American stars win at MTV awards

American singer Katy Perry

American stars triumphed at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Liverpool, with Britney Spears, Pink and Kanye West among the winners.

Britney won best act of 2008 and best album of the year for 'Blackout', but she lost out on being named best act ever to 1980s pop star Rick Astley!

He was one of only two British winners on the night, after an internet campaign to get people to vote for him.

It was a good night for awards host Katy Perry too - she won best newcomer.

Hip-hop star Kanye West won ultimate urban act while Pink got the prize for most addictive track for So What.

But it wasn't a great night for British acts. Leona Lewis, Coldplay and Duffy were all nominated for awards but went home empty-handed.

Thousands of music fans got to watch the show which was broadcast to millions of people all over the world.

Take That and Beyonce were among the performers on the night, along with British star Estelle who dedicated her performance of American Boy to the newly elected president Barack Obama.
