What do you think of Obama's victory?

Barack Obama supporters at a park in Chicago

After months of campaigning, Barack Obama is the new President of America.

He is the country's first ever black president, and is now one of the most important men in the whole world.

But do YOU think the best man won?

Will Obama make a good President, and why? Or do you think McCain would have done a better job?

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

Sara, 12, Nottingham, England

"I HATE OBAMA!"

Melissa, 10, Indiana, USA

"I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY that Obama won!!!!!!!!!! It is such a big change in history. McCain was way too old and just didn't know what he was talking about. Palin was a joke. And Obama is the youngest president of America. I don't want another George Bush being our president!! Finally, America will become a better place and people will start to actually BELIEVE that there is hope. This is a VERY historic time everyone! I feel so happy for black people too because they will just feel a lot more respected and honoured because of this beautiful change in history. GOOOOOOO OBAMA!!!!!!!!

Kashayla, 12, Medocino, USA

"Congratulations to Obama for becoming president of America. But i think it was on the British news a little bit too much and most people I know got quite bored. this is England not America so we aren't as interested. I dread the next election."

Kayley, 13, Devon, England

"I think it is good to have the first black president because he might be a change from the white ones before. It might get kids the same colour more confident because someone their own colour is representing the world."

Becky, 11, Warrington, England

"I think it's excellent that he won and the fact he's an African-American. It's really good and I think he deserved to win and I think he'll be a good president for America! Good luck Obama!!"

"I think Obama had the sympathy vote cause his nan died a couple of days before the vote"

Charlotte, 10, Birmingham, England

"I think Obama deserved to win because it was good for America and he's the first black president."

"I think Obama is great. I mean, don't get me wrong - McCain's cool, too. It's just that I think he's too old!"

Natasha, 12, Devon, England

"Dear Mr Obama: I think that you would be a better president than anyone in US history. Oh, and please fix the global financial problems. GO OBAMA!!"

Don, 11, Hong Kong, China

"SO HAPPY!! I seriously did not want McCain to win; I really didn't want another George Bush on the line. But now Obama has won, anything could happen."

Miranda, 13, London, England

"I hope Obama follows Nelson Mandela's example when Mandela became Africa's first black president in 1994. Obama must follow Mandela's footsteps!"

Amy, 12, New Zealand

"I think everyone should stop talking about Barack Obama being the first black President of the USA. He should be judged on his character and the ideas he's going to bring to make a better America, rather than the colour of his skin."

Matthew, 13, Worcestershire, England

"I think Barack Obama winning the election and becoming President has given young black children a hope for the future."

Katie, 12, Lincolnshire, England

"I am so happy Obama won as it is a fresh new face that will make a big difference."

Justine, 11, Chester, England

"I think Obama deserved to win. He had the best campaign. He really made people want to vote for him. I think you have to have a good campaign and then you will hopefully succeed. GO OBAMA!!"

Anisa, 10, Edinburgh, Scotland

"I'm not sure he has got any experience, so he could make a big mistake."

"I think this is a big step for America and I'm happy for Obama and I hope war will stop and hopefully racism will end."

"I feel happy for Obama because he has done his grandma and family proud."

Siraaj, 10, Berkshire, England

"I think that it is good that Obama won, but I feel sad for McCain because he tried his best and he took the blame."

Umar, 10, Reading, England

"Barack Obama is excellent! There's something in his eyes that says he will be a good president. Especially when his Nan died and he quit the election to support his family. He's better than Tony Blair! I think that McCain would have done a good job, but not half as good as Obama. In addition, he's the first ever black president in America!!! That's special! I don't agree with racism."

Charley, 11, West Sussex, England

"Obama will have a lot to face because of the economic downfall, but anyway I think he will be a good president for the United States. McCain would have been a good leader too, but I think he was too old."

Robert, 11, West Sussex, England

"McCain liked George Bush and Bush is horrible - he sent in all the troops to start a war for nothing. Thank goodness Mr Obama won."

Georgia, 13, London, England

"The US - no, the whole world - needs the new leader and a change. He is a perfect person to help people who are suffering from damage of the global financial crisis. We want to end the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lots of civilians are dying for no reason. We want to regulate guns in the US. It is too dangerous. Who would want to go to the country where everyone has a gun in their pocket? 40 years ago, Martin Luther King had a wonderful speech, 'I have a dream.' He said that he wanted his four little children to grow in a country where there were no differences between white and black people. His dreams have come true on this historic day, 5th of November. I think the US changed a lot since Martin Luther King's speech. GO OBAMA!!! CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!!!"

Daniel, 13, Australia

"Wow! It was brilliant; his speech was great and he definitely deserves it! He will help America no matter what colour skin he has."

Georgia, 11, Cambridge, England

"Personally, I wasn't sure in the beginning because Obama seemed really good but McCain seemed like a nice man and a good leader. I think that he would have been in with a higher chance if there had not been such bad publicity with Sarah Palin. I am very happy for Obama, though; I think America needs a president like him. For example, he's gong to be leading a third of the world and he's decided to pull out of Iraq and that will stop SO much terrorism. There will be more tourists in America soon because if we pull out of Iraq it means that America will be safer, too!"

Leah, 12, Dublin, Ireland

"Obama, I think that you're the best and you made me want to be president when I grow up because you made me think that you can do anything if you put your mind into it. Go Obama!!!!!!!!"

Jordan, 9, Denver, USA

"I do not think that Obama should be president because no-one knows anything about him and he has only been in the senate for 176 days - he is not qualified."

Christine, 13, USA

"I live in Texas, a highly Republican state, but I'm so glad Obama won!"

Katie, 13, Houston, USA

"Ghaylbiyaa (congrats)! It's great news - Obama wins! I think it's wonderful that he won; it has changed history. A new age under a new era. First black president! WOW!"

Bohngee, 14, Pakistan

"I am also glad that Obama won. Obama's going to be better for the US than McCain. I think Obama could've done better when picking his vice president; he should have picked Hilary Clinton instead of Biden. But he certainly didn't do as poorly as McCain's choosing. Good luck, Obama! And get the US troops out of Iraq, and definitely don't invade Iran and Pakistan! Good luck!"

JK, 15, London, England

"Yes, I am happy that he won and I hope he decides to make gun ownership harder, plus make big cat sales illegal!"

Helen, 12, New Zealand

"I think Obama will be a good president. I hope he can stop the credit crunch. It will be a tough challenge, but I think he can do it and make America a non-racist country."

Jack, 12, High Wycombe, England

"I think it's great that there is now a black president and I don't think it's fair that there wasn't one before now and that black people had to suffer (and still do) just because they're black."

Rachael, 8, Scotland

"Honestly, I'm scared. Obama's ideas were never fully developed and really don't follow the idea that America was founded on."

Courtney, 15, USA

"America can now prove that they accept change by electing a black president. It should destroy the views of some people that America is a land of prejudice and racism. Congratulations Mr Obama and good luck!"

Fraser, 12, Scotland

"I was for Obama, and I'm so utterly happy he won! I like McCain, but Sarah Palin is just, ugh."

Lilli, 11, USA

"I think neither were suitable to be elected, but if I had to make a choice, it would be Obama."

Dylan, 15, Dublin, Ireland

"Obama has shown it doesn't matter if you're black or white to be in the White House. CONGRATULATIONS, BARACK!"

Andrew, 9, Reading, England

"My family and I were thrilled to see Obama's win. We were in a queue for six hours waiting to vote!"

Amy, 12, Liverpool, England

"Obama really deserved this. He worked a lot to be President and now he's finally got what he wanted!!! He'll make a brilliant leader."

Hannah, 12, London, England

"Congratulations on your achievement. You really deserve being the first black president. When I grow up, I would like be Prime Minister for Great Britain but I wasn't sure if they would pick me because of my skin colour, but now I am proud of myself because I have someone to follow."

Abdifatah, 8, London, England

"I'm really pleased that Obama has been made president. I think it's important for us to take interest in what happens over there, because apparently it will affect the whole world. But he seems really nice and down to earth. I think America will benefit a lot with him. Also, it's amazing after the history for black people, such as slavery! I expect children will be learning about him in history lessons in the future! Go Obama!"

Hannah, 14, Wales

"I think McCain should have won because he's so old and has lots of experience. We watched the news in school today - I didn't know who won because I had a lie-in!"

Morgan, 10, Northern Ireland

"Well done, Obama!!! You will make such brilliant changes to the USA, and hopefully will stop war. Great work, Obama, you sure deserve it!!!!!!"

Bailey, 8, Hertfordshire, England

"It's great to see Obama become the next president of the USA and all the black people should be proud of it. However, I don't think racism will end in America. I do really hope the white and black people will work and live together because no one wants to see America dividing. They need unity not division. It's sad to see this happen."

Justin, 14, Oxford, England

"I knew he would win months ago; he's got the president's look and voice and he's charismatic. Also, most of the African-Americans voted for him; he is the man. He'll be there for eight years. He'll get re-elected again in four years' time."

Maranda, 12, Oxford, England

"I think it's great that America has got a black president; the world is finally turning even. I just hope that it will carry on getting better and that what happened to Martin Luther King doesn't happen."

Tom, 12, Essex, England

"Congratulations to Senator Obama who fully deserved to win. He will make an excellent president for the USA; he will bring the change that is so badly needed."

Flo, 12, Oxford, England

"Being black myself, I can understand what importance this election has had. Barack Obama is not only the first black president in all of American history, but he is also a person who you can tell is REAL, and we all know he's not putting up an act. His views are those that will lead the States to a well deserved victory once again."

Enkuush, 10, London, England

"OBAMA won!!!!!!! This is a mark in history for our country. I am so glad he won. Obama came to our school during his campaign and his ideas and views are brilliant! I was in the crowds watching him and his winning speech live!! Barack Obama, president elect, deserved to win. He wants our country to be united because here racial issues are still a problem. McCain was into the military: we want peace, not war!! Well done, OBAMA!"

Ally, 12, Chicago, USA
