England miss out on big-money win

The Stanford Superstars

England's cricketers have missed out on a huge payday in the Caribbean, after a heavy loss to the Stanford Superstars.

The winning team earned $20m (£12.4m) for the victory, to be split among the players and the coaching staff, while the losing team won nothing.

And England were never really in the match, eventually losing in a flurry of sixes, by 10 wickets.

They only scored 99 in their innings, and the Stanford Superstars wasted no time hitting the 100 runs they needed.

Their captain Chris Gayle made batting look much easier than the England players had, smashing five sixes and five fours as he scored 65 not out.

Only three members of the England team scored more than 10 runs, and of those only Samit Patel scored more than 20.

The loss comes at the end of a pretty bad week for England, and captain Kevin Pietersen admitted that the massive sum of cash on offer to the winners was a distraction.

He said: "As much experience as we have, we came into this week with huge uncertainty. No one has ever played for $20 million in three hours.

"We have not done it the right way. We have not concentrated solely on the cricket. The distractions were too many. Next year we will buy into it giving it a real good go."
