Is Halloween too scary?

Ore and kids in a shop

It's Halloween on Friday, and Ore is already getting ready for the big night.

Halloween is now famous for trick or treating and scary masks, but not everyone thinks it's a good idea.

The Children's Society and the Church of England think some of the outfits on sale are too scary for children. They're teaming up to organise Happy Halloween parties that won't scare anyone!

So what do you think of Halloween? Is it too scary? Is it a big deal for you, or do you ignore it and stay inside rather than knock on doors for treats?

Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index.

Your comments

"I think Halloween is not too scary. If you are under 10 and you go out with a adult you can't get too scared. But children over will not get very scared."

Kali, 9, Birmingham, England

"I enjoy it. However it can be begging sometimes. I had to throw some snotty little kids out last year after they swore because we had no sweets."

Mick, 13, North Yorkshire, England

"Halloween is a stupid American idea!!"

Laura, 11, Manchester, England

"It is a lot of fun for little kids trick or treating, but when you get to be 13 to 14 and over it's a bit old for us, but teenagers can have a party!!!!"

Sarah, 13, Clywd, Wales

"No it isn't because you know it's Halloween and you're expecting people to be dressed up in costumes."

Ailbhe, 10, Norfolk, England

"No way, I'm going trick or treating and it is all fun. Me and my friends are then going to watch a scary movie and I can't wait."

Mark, 9, London, England

"I am Catholic and have never celebrated Halloween. I totally agree with the Church of England and The Children's Society. Lots of costumes in windows scare the life out of my 4-year-old sister. We just stay at home or go out and don't answer the door. "

Emily, 11, Lancashire, England

"I think Halloween isn't scary - it's a bit of fun once a year!!"

Jon, 8, Rochdale, England

"I think Halloween is fab. It's tradition in my family to have a huge party, a great way of bringing people together and keeping in touch. If you don't like it, don't celebrate it. We love it so get a life and have some fun."

Adele, 14, Manchester, England

"People and kids don't really know the meaning of Halloween...its not just some stupid joke. Hate Halloween..."

Hannah, 13, Wales

"I'm a teenager and I love Halloween because you get to dress up and see your friends. Most teenagers act sensibly and would never dream of hurting anyone(physically or emotionally)."

Aislinn, 14, Durham, England

"No way... it's fun. If you're too scared, don't celebrate it! It's known for its scariness - why should you spoil it for others?"

Safura, 10, Leicester, England

"I don't go out trick-or-treating unless it's with a friend and their parents instead of mine. I think teenagers sometimes go too far, like throwing eggs at houses. I think Halloween should be less scary for younger children, but not older people who enjoy it."

Molly, 10, Suffolk, England

"Halloween is good fun and I don't think they should ban it. If you don't like it, don't celebrate it. Put a sign on your door saying don't trick or treat here!"

Grace, 11, London, England

"Halloween is really fun to dress up, eat sweets and have parties but trick or treating can sometimes intimidate people."

Lucy, 11, Halifax, England

"Halloween is the stupidest concept. Believe it or not some elderly people can't afford to buy buckets of sweets. I appreciate that some strange people find that sort of thing fun, but Halloween should be more voluntary. I will not be giving anyone anything on Friday."

George, 12, Essex, England

"Halloween is only once a year so I think everyone should just enjoy it and have fun."

Liam, 10, Torfaen, Wales

"I don't think it's scary at all!"

Ellie, 8, Wiltshire, England

"Since when was Halloween too scary? That's so ridiculous; Halloween is amazing and is not too scary. HALLOWEEN IS AMAZING! I love it; I love going trick-or-treating with my mates. And there are some ROCKIN' costumes!!"

Holly, 11, UK

"Halloween is bad news. Why do people go around begging: 'Hey, you - yeah, you. Give us a sweet or I will egg your house.' People are so out of order because Halloween is meant to be fun and games but now people are being killed by it and it could be YOU! Turn on the news on Halloween and I am sure that it will be full of stories about houses being vandalised, people in hospital for injuries and even people being killed ! And just think that when you go trick or treating you are being a part of all that and sometimes I get people at my door without costumes and they don't even say 'trick or treat,' they say that they would prefer money. People should only trick-or-treat under the age of 13."

Rosie, 12, Manchester, England

"Sure, it is scary for little kids and older people so instead of making it LESS scary, they should put up signs - e.g. old people have a sign on their window saying "NO TRICK OR TREATING" etc., and call the police if someone tries. I see the problem with some teenagers, but if they are going round with their sisters like I'm going round with my seven-year-old sister then there's no prob."

Emma, 12, Gateshead, England

"I think that Halloween is actually OK but I really hate trick-or-treating because it is rude and it's like begging! It is also soooo commercialised."

Lucy, 11, Reading, England

"I'd also like to say that though some masks are a bit freaky it's part of the fun! But if you want to be a fairy, be a fairy. I'm fine being a piranha-eaten girl this year. But maybe there should be 'cut-off' sections with the scarier costumes in with a sign saying something like 'WARNING: these costumes are not suitable to be seen by young or easy-to-scare people, as some may be too freaky.' Something like that and then so the person doesn't have to bring it out to pay for it, there should be a counter inside this area for the freaky costumes, while the other masks and costumes are out for everyone to look at."

Catalina, 10, Cornwall, England

"I don't think Halloween should be less scarier as we have done it every year. Why should it be less scarier this year?"

Michael, 10, Perthshire, Scotland

"This year we are getting my brother to wear a big wolf glove when giving out sweets through the letter box. It will be great unless the Church of England stop us!"

Mej, 11, Coventry, England

"I think Halloween is getting a bit too scary. Teenagers are the worst. They're masks frighten the elderly. Me and my friend are now forced to take our siblings early to avoid them getting scared."

Georgia, 12, Newport, Wales

"I cannot believe that some people want Halloween to be scare free. I mean the whole point of Halloween is that you scare people."

Merly, 11, Norwich, England

"I'm a Christian, and Halloween dressing up and going trick or treating is actually giving your life to the Devil. I'm going to an anti-Halloween party on Friday."

Nadia, 12, Windsor, England

"I think Halloween's great! I love trick or treating. But I don't like it when older boys throw fireworks."

Ellie, 11, Glasgow, Scotland

"I love Halloween. Sometimes I go trick or treat, sometimes I have a party. Whichever way, its all fun and if anyone doesn't like it or tries to put a stop to trick or treating, then they're just spoiling our fun!"

Shannon, 11, Kent, England

"I don't think Halloween is scary, it's just fun. Me and my friends always go out trick or treating and none of my friends think its scary!"

Megan, 11, Inverclyde, Scotland

"That's ridiculous! If little ones are scared, send them to bed! It's just a bit of harmless fun, although I disagree with knocking at elderly people's houses. Anyway, what do the Children Society and COE know about kids? They are just adults who think they know everything about us."

Tom, 9, Liverpool, England

"I think Halloween is so stupid because you spend money on silly costumes you are only going to wear once or twice a year. You also scare venerable people for no reason."

Molly, 11, England

"I think Halloween isn't that bad. It's fun dressing up but sometimes it gets quite hot under those costumes! But why do we celebrate Halloween?"

Alishba, 11, Manchester, England

"I think that Halloween is good and I think that without all the scary costumes and decorations, Halloween isn't Halloween; it's like Christmas without presents! They need to realise that Halloween is good and they need to stop ruining our fun! The only thing I don't like is answering the door - it freaks me out!"

Dean, 12, Lincolnshire, England

"I think teenagers often use Halloween as an excuse to just frighten people when they're bored. It makes them feel powerful."

Ella, 11, Hampshire, England

"Halloween isn't scary - it's fun! People only dress up for a laugh and it's fun playing all the old Halloween games like apple-bobbing, although some teenagers take it a bit far and turn it into a mission to scare as many old people and young children as possible. It's horrible when you turn the corner and there's a gang of kids in gruesome masks and long cloaks, but apart from that it's great. But I think more could be done to stop it being so frightening for toddlers and little kids."

Maddie, 12, Stockport, England

"It is begging when you say trick or treat - it's practically a threat. Imagine if you said that to a 90-year-old woman; she would most probably call the police."

John, 11, Bradford, England

"I think that Halloween is getting a bit too scary. This year we are not putting out a pumpkin because last year my younger sister got scared by some of the masks. I also went into the shops the other day and I was surprised at how horrible some of the masks really are. I am still looking forward to it though, and getting lots of sweets!"

Ellie, 9, Surrey, England

"I think it is fun, but must be very scary for older people and I do not think egging is right. I think egging should be stopped."

Rob, 11 and James, 9, Wales

"I think it is a really fun event, but my mum doesn't let me go trick or treating, which I think is a bit unfair, but we always have a disco!"

Amelia, 10, Surrey, England

"Halloween is really annoying and some people take it too far."

JC, 13, England

"I think Halloween is cool as long as you stick to the people who you normally trick or treat from."

Rachel, 10, Kent, England

"I think Halloween is stupid because all you do is scare people and dress up in silly costumes."

Naomi, 9, London, England

"I think Halloween is great but some masks are getting a bit too scary as it scares all three of my younger cousins and they have nightmares after!"

Lauren, 12, Scotland

"I think Halloween is pointless because everyone knows that there will be a knock on the door and an ugly face popping out of someone's head. I hate Halloween."

Zakariyya, 10, Birmingham, England

"You're taking the fun out of Halloween when you take out the scary part. The tradition was to dress up in scary costumes and scare away the evil spirits. It's like sending hate mail to everyone you know on Valentine's."

Grace, 12, Dublin, Ireland

"I think Halloween is great! It's supposed to be a night where you can have fun by getting lots of sweets or money. Also, you are spending time with your friends and family. Personally, I don't think Halloween has got any scarier. The only problem with Halloween is people egging your house. To be honest I don't find it funny and I wouldn't find it funny if I was with someone who was actually doing it."

Monika, 13, Northamptonshire, England

"I find Halloween a fun event but some older members of the community find it scary and shocking when people end up by there door in masks."

Lauren, 11, Shropshire, England

"I hate Halloween. I wish it wasn't even invented."

Hannah, 13, Wales

"I think Halloween is great but I agree it sometimes gets a little scary, but personally I love getting sweets for great costumes and cool tricks!"

Elspeth, 9, Dublin, Ireland

"Halloween is a tradition and there are a lot more scary things in the world than a few kids dressing up."

Phoebe, 10, London, England

"WHAT?? I think Halloween is fantastic, it isn't meant to be so scary, it is meant to be for fun."

Camila, 13, Brecon, Wales

"I love Halloween to bits. It's fun for me and adults because my mum loves Halloween. It's cool."

Chloe, 12, Milton Keynes, England

"I think that Halloween is getting scary. I saw terrifying costumes in the shop."

Kulsum, 8, London, England

"I think Halloween is fun and trick or treating is a laugh and it's not right to be told what costumes we can and can't wear."

Adam, 9, Worcestershire, England

"Halloween is not a tradition, it is something the Americans made up to have some fun but now I think that it has gone to far!!!!"

Sarah, 11, Kent, England

"I think Halloween is good but I agree that some of the costumes are too scary for little children. Also, sometimes it gets too late and little children are still out way past their bedtime. It is good fun but is should be less scary."

Olivia, 10, Gloucestershire, England

"I think Halloween is great, I get loads of chocolate and sweets, I think as long as a responsible adult is with you out trick or treating it should be OK."

Holly, 11, Wales

"I don't think it's that scary, maybe for little children but I still like it, but if it did get more scary I would ban it."

Liam, 8, Rotherham, England

"Halloween isn't too scary but houses get egged if they don't give out sweets."

Anika, 11, London, England

"Halloween is meant to be scary, if some people don't like it, don't join in."

Gareth, 12, England

"Halloween in this country is just copying America. We should make Bonfire Night bigger again and stop doing what the Americans do all the time."

James, 12, Gloucester, England

"I don't think Halloween is scary; I think everyone (except the elderly) should go out and get some sweets."

Levi, 9, London, England

"I love Halloween and it's not too scary! It's just for having a laugh with your mates!"

Katy, 13, Dublin, Ireland

"I like Halloween but my mum thinks it's a stupid idea. I think it is excellent. Mum would not let me go trick or treating because it is a waste of time getting a costume together and it is for one night a year."

Joe, 11, Cheshire, England

"Just because the minority want a change doesn't mean we have to go along with it too! There are things much scarier than those silly, unrealistic masks that no-one complains about! Personally, I think it's biased and contradictory!!!"

Katie, 13, Manchester, England

"Of course Halloween is supposed to be scary; no one's going to dress up as a pirate or a fairy when everyone else is a monster or a mutant."

Jordan, 11, West Midlands, England

"Making Halloween friendly is such a stupid idea. If you don't want to get scared have a little fairy party somewhere, but don't spoil it for us who aren't scared!"

Abi, 10, Torquay, England

I think Halloween is not as scary as people think. But if you remember ghouls, monsters, vampires or witches are not real."

David, 9, Bridgend, Wales

"I was scared when I was five! But come on...It is not scary! If you are scared why go trick or treating?????"

Katie, 10, Wakefield, England

"I don't think Halloween is too scary because people find it fun and they look forward to it. I don't think it should change."

Jess, 12, London, England

"I don't think Halloween is that scary, but really it's a tradition to be scary. And it only comes round once a year so why not make the most of it??"

Hugh, 11, Reading, England

"I think Halloween is just a bit of harmless fun and this Children's Society is just ruining it, and also everyone gets free sweets!"

Rory, 10, Belfast, Ireland

"What's the point if it is not scary?"

Andrew, 9, Greenwich, England

"I think, as a Christian, that Halloween is too scary now. It will be my first trick or treating night on Friday so I am going as a black cat."

Sarah, 9, Cheltenham, England

"I think it is so stupid that people think Halloween is too scary. Shops can sell what they want. It is a festival to scare off all the evil spirits. it is meant to be scary."

Amy, 13, Wiltshire, England

"Halloween is now less scary which is bad because it doesn't matter that you are scared because Halloween is about being scary. Oh, and what happened to making your own costume?"

Jack, 11, Bristol, England

"I think It's just silly what people do to make Halloween frightening."

Rinor, 10, Middlesex, England

"Halloween's SUPPOSED to be scary!! It won't be Halloween if people don't get freaked out!"

Akousa, 11, Kent, England

"I hate all the freaky masks so I'm dressing as a cat!!"

Olivia, 11, North Yorkshire, England

"I think Halloween is fun; trying on costumes, making yourself look scary. But it's not fun when teenagers do horrible stuff to people's property and scaring off young children."

Emma, 11, London, England

"I think Halloween isn't scary for older kids but scary for the little ones."

Julie, 11, London, England

"I think Halloween should be a bit scary; most children enjoy a little fear AND sweets. Adults don't always realise children like dressing up and scaring people every year. Plus Sweets."

Madeleine, 11, Yorkshire

"I think Halloween is great. Not everyone agrees though."

Anne, 11, Hampshire, England

"I think Halloween is a fun time. If you're scared, remember monsters, witches and ghosts are not real!"

Georgia, 11, England

"Halloween is meant to be scary!! It is a festival originally made to scare off evil spirits! You can't scare an evil spirit with a fairy."

Rachel, 12, Southampton, England

"I think Halloween is a bit scary for those under six, but it's not very scary for people my age. It's just not as fun anymore! :("

Emily, 12, Middlesbrough, England

"I think it is not scary because it doesn't look realistic!!!!!!!"

Dominic, 7, Manchester, England

"I am 12 and I hate Halloween. I think all of it is a waste of money and scares people to death, like elderly people and babies and people that don't like Halloween."

Ruth, 12, Northern Ireland

"I don't like Halloween, because it's all about getting sweets, disturbing elderly people and dressing up for a few hours, which I'm not bothered about. It's a waste of time, disturbing people for sweets or tricks!"

Evie, 12, Leeds, England

"Halloween's supposed to be scary. If it's not, what's the point? Pretty soon the government will be saying Easter's too unhealthy and Christmas is too happy. It's getting too out of hand."

Iona, 13, North Yorkshire, England

"I think Halloween is very silly and it can get very frightening for younger children."

Hannah, 11, Scotland

"I'm dressing up as a goth fairy. I will be partying with my friends and celebrating Frank Iero's birthday (My Chemical Romance's guitarist). I don't think trick or treating is morally correct, so I'm officially giving it up this year with the party. Despite this, I don't disapprove of others trick or treating, as long as the trick aspect doesn't come into it. If you are the parent of a child you think will get scared, don't complain about it - just don't let your child see it! Halloween is a personal choice, not a public debate. Participate in whatever parts you want, just respect others' opinions."

Eden, 12, London, England

"Halloween is not scary; it's fun because I get lots of chocolates and money."

Megan, 11, Wales

"Halloween is fun and when I was about three I didn't think it was scary, I thought it was fun. If little children don't want to get scared, don't go wandering about the streets!"

Jonny, 10, Bristol, England

"I think it's silly to not make Halloween scary. It's like making Santa evil or theme-ing Easter around something other than eggs and the resurrection. I think that some masks are horrible, but most aren't."

Henry, 11, Peterborough, England

"The only reason that the masks are thought of as being scary is because of the films they are associated with. The masks aren't scary if you don't know the films they are associated with."

Ben, 13, London, England

"I don't think it's scary!! Even though parents get scared I think they have fun doing it!!!"

Leah, 12, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

"Halloween is supposed to be scary, it's the whole point. If people just went round trick or treating without a costume it would just be stupid because it's practically begging for sweets. The costume is the best and the main part of Halloween."

Gemma, 14, Essex, England

"Halloween doesn't HAVE to be scary. I'm going as Darth Vader! He's not scary! I mean, it's OK for everyone to go as vampires and witches and stuff, but you don't HAVE to be someone scary."

Tomos, 9, Wales

"Halloween has never been a big deal for me or my family, but in some shops I have seen the costumes and they look scarier than they used to. And it also annoys quite a lot of people, because lots of people do the tricking part rather than the treating part and that's annoying!!!!"

Katie, 12, Cambridge, England

"Halloween is just fun really. I heard my teacher say it is meant to take the bad spirits AWAY from you, not INTO you!"

Jake, 10, North Yorkshire, England

"I think Halloween is a bit scary and the monsters should stay in their homes."

Matthew, 5, Staffordshire, England

"For elderly people Halloween can be frustrating and annoying if you try to scare them."

Emmanuel, 9, London, England

"My sister is four and she's never been scared of Halloween. Grown-ups are just trying to stop our fun. Why would there be Halloween? To scare the devils away. If you think Halloween is scary you should lock yourself in."

Oliver, 8, London, England

"I think it's stupid because it is not the adults who are dressing up, it is the kids!"

Euan, 10, Glasgow, Scotland

"They're always complaining about something. It's Halloween, for witches' sake!"

Bethany, 13, Argyll and Bute, Scotland

"I think Halloween can be good fun, but only if you celebrate it nicely. Don't throw eggs or let down tyres, and if you are old enough to trick or treat on your own, then you're too old."

Susie, 12, Kent, England

"There are more important issues on Halloween to be worrying about! They should stop people egging and tricking nice people's homes and property, not making children dress as pirates! Agreed, it's not nice for younger children, but who is opening the door - a six-year-old or a 37-year-old? Clearly the adults are more frightened than their offspring are!"

Florence, 14, London, England

"Halloween's just once a year and just a bit of fun and not many people are scared and if you are, just stay in. My brother's six, and for years he's been going as vampires and loads of different monsters but he's not scared, he knows they're not real."

Lyndsey, 12, Liverpool, England

"If you can't be scary then what's the point? And if you're scared, stay in. Most costumes are not scary enough; I actually think there needs to be more scary ones because I wanted to make a big effort to be really scary."

Aimee, 12, Liverpool, England

"If young children are scared then on Halloween only children above six years old should be allowed to go trick or treating. And on Halloween it should be scary, not fairies."

Dominic, 11, London, England

"Talk about spoiling Halloween!!! It's supposed to be scary - that's the point. And besides, I think it should be more scary and realistic. No-one wants to be something boring and babyish, like a fairy or pirate."

Harri, 14

"I don't think Halloween is too scary - that's like saying that cheese is too cheesy - Halloween is a celebration of monsters and all things scary."

Ian, 13, Scotland

"I think it's a ridiculous idea. Everyone knows that kids love to be scared. It's human nature. The Americans dress up as fairies and other things too for Halloween, and I think it ruins the point. JUST LEAVE OUR BEST DAY OF THE YEAR ALONE!"

Fiona, 11, Durham, England

"It's good to be scary because it is exciting, but it is good that they have put more choice in the shops!"

Sian, 11, UK

"What is the point of Halloween if it isn't a teensy bit scary? Last year, I went trick or treating and it was really fun. My friends all have younger brothers and sisters and none of them got frightened (the youngest was four)."

Bee, 11, Cumbria, England

"We do NOT think that Halloween should be made less scary!!! Pirates are lame!!! Halloween isn't scary as it is!!! We say: 'Make it scarier!!!!!!!!!!!'"

Anna and Jack, 11, Scotland

"I think Halloween is fun - I love dressing up!!! I think some masks are too scary though, and although there are little kids who wouldn't get scared, I think they shouldn't put corpse masks or scary clown masks or masks like that on sale. I think most costumes are OK though."

Katy, 11, York, England

"NO WAY!! Scary IS fun! That's the point!"

Daisy, 12, Wales

"I love Halloween, because I get to scare my little sister with my fake blood."

Sofia, 11, Essex, England

"Halloween isn't fun. It scares my little brother, who is seven, and it annoys elderly people."

Rahim, 11, London, England

"No - what's the point of dressing up as a fairy for Halloween? It's meant to be scary!"

Estella, 10, Reading, England

"I think Halloween is fun but only if you go treating not tricking. I find it hard to believe that people would want to celebrate being scary and tricking people."

Kayla, 11, High Wycombe, England

"Halloween is just a bit of fun. Some adults don't realise that once most children are past the age of eight they aren't scared of monsters and stuff like that. Everyone knows monsters don't really exist so what's the point in being scared of them?! One of my friends isn't allowed to celebrate it and she gets really annoyed. As long as you know it's just a bit of fun and don't take it too seriously you'll be fine!!"

Helen, 12, England

"I think Halloween is better scary because if it wasn't scary it would just be people walking about in fancy dress and if it's too scary for kids then their parents should just tell them it's not real!"

Julie, 11, Scotland

"Most little kids go as things like pirates and ballerinas anyway, so where's the harm in letting older kids dress up in scarier costumes?"

Caroline, 13, Kent, England

"I don't think that Halloween is scary at all! I go trick or treating with my mates and we have a great time! If little children are scared then perhaps they shouldn't go trick or treating."

Ella, 12, Devon, England

"Halloween is meant to be scary! That's really the whole point. If little children are getting frightened it's up to their parents to make alternate arrangements for them. Un-scary Halloween parties would suck the fun out of things!"

Mizzy, 12, Northern Ireland

"I don't see why we should have to be non-scary for Halloween. But the people who deliberately try to scare younger kids just ruin it. There has to be a balance."

Rosie, 12, Chester, England

"I don't think Halloween is scary for people my age but for younger children it could be so I think young children should be with their parents when going out."

Kieran, 13, Birmingham, England

"I think Halloween is great fun. I agree it probably can get a bit scary for little kids, but they could just stay in their house or something."

Meg, 9, Wales

"The point of Halloween is to be scary. These days adults always have ways to make things seem less fun!"

Sophie, 13, London, England

"I think Halloween is fine but some people take it too far, like throwing eggs at people's houses. But trick or treating is OK. It would be so mean if someone stops Halloween!!!!"

Molly, 10, Bristol, England

"I think some people make Halloween too scary, like making people jump. I think Halloween should be fun and enjoyable but not too scary."

Richard, 10, Kent, England

"Little kids can stay home - in fact, go to bed if they are too scared. They need to grow up. Everyone loves being scared, especially older kids, so of course we want to be scary! I'm being a black cat with red lipstick this year!"

Ely, 11, Watford, England

"There is no point in Halloween at all if it isn't going to be scary because it's the fact it is scary that makes it so enjoyable!"

Adam, 12, Solihull, England

"I am dressing up as a French mime - not too scary as I care for younger ones."

Megan, 11, Cambridgeshire, England

"No, it isn't! Maybe to little kids but I don't think it's that scary. This year I am being a pirate! But I don't like that many sweets so I don't really care."

Catherine, 11, Ireland

"I love Halloween but you can't go trick or treating when you're a teenager without being accused of scaring people or making too much noise or trouble etc. My friends and I would never do that; it's just a bad rep kids get today. So now we will just sit in and watch a scary movie."

Sophie, 14, London, England

"I think this is all a bit ridiculous. Halloween is supposed to be scary! And I really don't think that a scary mask is going to scar a child for life!! This is yet another example of adults trying to wrap children up in cotton wool."

Tatty, 13, London, England

"I love Halloween and I live in the Middle East and so it is really safe to go trick and treating and stuff and the masks aren't scary; they are plastic. Halloween isn't always about it being scary. For me and my mates it is about dressing up and just having fun trick or treating and getting sweets and hanging with each other. "

Emily, 12, Qatar

"Halloween is a great day! If little kids get frightened they should stay in and not ruin it for older kids!"

Jesle, 13, Essex, England

"If people think Halloween is scary they shouldn't get involved and ruin it for the people who just want to have some fun."

Lucy, 12, Suffolk, England

"My mum and dad won't let me because they think Halloween is dangerous and what's the point? Your mum and dad can buy sweets. It's begging, I think. They put scary ones on older ones and it scares the younger ones."

Chloe, 10, Blackburn, England

"I think that Halloween is way too scary for children. I don't like it and I think a few people might agree with not liking it and I don't like trick or treating because of the costumes and masks."

Savannah, 10, Cornwall, England

"Halloween is scary and fun and there's nothing wrong with it."

Theepika, 9, London, England

"I think it's ridiculous. They try and take away everything else, and then they think that Halloween is 'too scary' for kids. What's society coming to now? That's what Halloween is all about! That's like saying Christmas is too happy! Halloween's one of the best times of year, and if they'd just take a look at the kids in the street, they'd see they're having the best times of their lives!"

Becky, 14, Essex, England

"Where I live, some of the teenagers go to people's house without any fancy dress and they do this about a mouth before Halloween and about a month after so older people get angry with them so when it is Halloween they don't answer the door and so people who do not do this lose out. I think this is very unfair because I have two little sisters and because of the actions of older people the little ones miss out."

Catherine, 14, North Wales

"My mum always tells me not to talk to strangers but on one night of the year, HALLOWEEN, we go knocking on people's doors and this is why my mum is doing a Halloween party for me every year."

Jessica, 9, Richmond, England

"The whole point in Halloween is to make yourself look as scary as possible! If little kids get too frightened then they should stay inside the house and not get involved. Halloween is great fun, plus you get loads of sweeeeeties!"

Cherri, 13, Liverpool, England

"Halloween outfits are NOT scary! I go trick or treating every year and get loads of yummy treats :) This year I am going to be a ghost. I will have an old bed sheet on me and I will wear a funky ghost mask! I can't wait."

Sophia, 11, Cambridge, England

"In the past I've ignored it, but this is the first year where I've really bothered to do something! I've already made a pumpkin lantern and on Friday I'm going to a scary sleepover party with my friends."

Rachel, 12, Walsall, England

"I think October is a good time for Halloween as the prospect of winter is so scary. Really, it is just a fun thing for kids and I like to enjoy it."

Demi, 10, London, England

Cara, 13, Bangor, Wales

"I really like Halloween, and it's my last year of trick or treating this year so I'm going to make the most of it. I don't get how the masks are 'scary'. They're made out of plastic or whatever they're made of. Maybe they're scary to 5 year olds, but not me."

Ben, 13, Derbyshire, England

"Halloween is great. It's not too scary in fact it could be scarier."

Alice, 12, Northants, England

"I think the younger ones shouldn't be able to go out at Halloween. And ok if the costumes are so bad why have them? Well because it's all fun and what is the meaning of Halloween anyway? Is it fun or no costumes?"

Lauren, 11, England

"For Halloween I will be going trick or treating with my friends. It will be my two year old cousin's first time!"

Fariha, 12, Hertfordshire

"I go trick or treating at Halloween. I think it's stupid having non-scary Halloween masks and stuff, they should leave it as it is!"

Micha, 11, Northampton, England

"I think that some of Halloween is good but now it's just becoming too scary."

Lucas, 12, Reigate, England

"I think that if Halloween's not scary it's no fun. We don't enjoy because we get creeped out, it's not just about the sweets!!"

Holly, 11, Dorset, England

"I think teenagers are the biggest problem because they buy really scary masks and scare little children!"

Naomi, 10, Wales

"If Halloween is too scary for little children, don't take them out! It shouldn't ruin the night for older children or others."

Megan, 12, Maidenhead, England

"I think it is ridiculous, Halloween is meant to be scary, if people don't like trick or treaters then you can get a sign on your door from the council to say could you please not knock!"

Ben, 13, Basingstoke, England

"Halloween is not that scary; I understand if a young child gets scared but if they take away the scary masks, what is the point? Halloween is meant to be scary, that's the fun of it. They shouldn't take it away from us."

"Halloween isn't scary it's just good fun and the masks aren't that scary."

"I have never really liked Halloween. I don't know for sure why, I just don't like people dressing up so I'm not really doing much, I might go to a sailing party."

Leah, 12, Dublin, Ireland

"My sister and I love to trick or treat but my parents aren't sure."

Hager, 10, Surrey, England

"I'm not going trick or treating, I'll probably just stay at home dressed up to scare my sisters."

Leila, 13, England
