England have opened the Rugby League World Cup with a WIN against Papua New Guinea in Australia, but they had a tough time doing it.

Late first-half tries by Jason Chan and George Keppa put Papua New Guinea in the lead at half-time.

But England fought back with Lee Smith levelling the match with the second of his three tries.

Martin Gleeson and Ade Gardner, with his second try of the game, went on to secure the team's 33-22 victory.

The match in Townsville was the first of the month long 10-team tournament.

On Sunday, Scotland face France in Canberra, and defending champions Australia takes on New Zealand in Sydney.
