Ricky checks out new gaming trend

Ricky checks out the game with its Newsround world

There's loads of money to be made in video games and competition to come up with the latest must-have releases is tough.

One new game has got gaming experts really excited because it promises a virtual world which you can make yourself and share with your mates online.

Ricky went to check it out to see what all the fuss is about...

"As the battle of the games consoles rages on, I spent the day looking at the latest video gaming trends.

Here in the UK, Nintendo is the most popular console. So far this year, lots of people have bought a Nintendo DS or a Nintendo Wii, outnumbering the amount of PlayStation and XBox consoles sold in 2008.

Checkout this giant Sackboy...

So now the fight back begins and Sony, the company behind PlayStation 3, are about to release the most anticipated video game of the year.

It's called LittleBigPlanet (LBP) and it's set to change the way you play video games forever.

You're going to hear a lot about Sackboy over the next couple of months - he's the lead character in LBP and one of the best things about the game.

What makes LittleBigPlanet unique is just how creative it is. You can customize your own levels, change the way Sackboy looks and even post your creations online for your mates to play with.

Sharing graphics

It's all about sharing your creations with millions of other gamers across the globe.

You can create a new world from scratch while facing obstacles, puzzles and collecting prizes. The graphics are really good and Sackboy is an instant hit.

But LittleBigPlanet isn't the only game out there which lets you create characters. Nintendo DS features the game Spore Creatures, which lets you do similar things and has already proved to be really popular.

I got a chance to play LBP (which can only be played on PlayStation 3) before anyone else and even met the game makers. Alex Evans told me he created the game in a small office above a toilet shop in Guilford!

It took Alex and his team worked on the game for more than two years and now it's set to become the fastest-selling video game of the year.

Is it any good?

I really enjoyed playing it! It wasn't really that complicated, and if you can't be bothered to create an original level you can play with the ones that are already there.

The creators of the game designed a level especially for Newsround which featured our studio, the famous 'nr' logo and all our studio lights and sofas.

That's the best part about this game, you can do pretty much anything and everything with it!

The game's original release date had to be pushed back, because the original version offended some Muslims. Some of the background music in the game featured phrases from the Koran, which is the holy scripture for Islam.

Now Sony has removed that music and you can expect to see LittleBigPlanet in the shops from 5 November. But will it top your Christmas wish-list?"
