Blind driver smashes record

Luc Costermans

Blind driver Luc Costermans has broken the world blind road speed record.

The Belgian topped 308.78km/h (192 mph) in a borrowed Lamborghini Gallardo supercar on an airstrip in Istre, southern France.

Mr Costermans, who was blinded in an accident four years ago, hit the top speed twice.

He was guided by his co-pilot Guillaume Roman, who he thanked afterwards saying: "I'm very, very happy. It's a team effort."

The new record beat Briton Mike Newman, who managed 268km/h in a BMW M5 in 2005.
