Chinese kids ill from milk powder

Children being treated in a Chinese hospital

More than 50,000 children have fallen ill and four have died in China after drinking milk with chemicals in it.

The milk was made from powder, which had a chemical called melamine in it. Around 13,000 children, most younger than two, are still in hospital.

In small amounts melamine can't hurt people, and it's not likely to make older kids poorly, but small amounts can be dangerous for younger children.

So far 18 people have been arrested in connection with the problems.

All the people arrested worked at places where milk was taken to after being collected from farmers.

Melamine may have been added on purpose to the milk before it was turned into milk powder.

It's thought the melamine might have been used to make it look like there was more protein in the milk than there actually was.

Scandal

Melamine helps add extra protein, but it also has something else in it that can make people ill by damaging their kidneys.

The man in charge of China's food safety has quit because this is such a big scandal.

Other countries in Asia are checking their shelves for contaminated Chinese products.
