Is wearing glasses cool?

Children wearing glasses

Some kids who wear glasses say they hate it because it makes other kids pick on them.

But loads of people think specs are so cool they're choosing to wear them as a fashion accessory.

So what do you think about wearing glasses? If you wear them, do you love them or hate them? Do they make you look cool like Harry Potter and Doctor Who?

Or if you don't wear specs, do you think kids who do are treated differently? Would you ever wear fashion specs?

Your Comments

"I've just started wearing glasses a few years ago. No one ever picked on me and everybody loves my glasses, some people even want to buy them off me! A lot of people now want to wear glasses because they look cool and stylish."

Emma, 12, Newcastle, England

"I've been wearing glasses since year five but it was only for the blackboard and TV. But last year my optician told me I had to wear them full time and I felt gutted because I found them annoying... I think some people see others differently if they wear glasses (more intelligent or not as attractive). I am thinking of wearing contact lenses because I look so much nicer without them. Nearly half of my class at school wears glasses!"

Marianna, 13, Greece

"We think teasing and calling people names is wrong! Glasses help people to read and write clearly and then you can grow up to be really clever. We say, 'Four eyes are better than two sometimes!!'"

Year 5 class, ages 8 and 9, Kent, England

"They look cool and make you look smart."

Jake, 14, Peterborough, England

"I think they are OK. I don't mind wearing them, as they help me see better. But if I didn't need them, I would only wear sunglasses."

Emily, 11, England

"I've worn glasses since year five and no-one's said anything. It's just something I wear each day. Mine are cool - they bend! I don't see why people think glasses are nerdy - because you can get really funky ones as well!"

Olivia, 13, Preston, England

"I hate wearing glasses. That's why I go to school not wearing them, but in lessons I have to. Next year I am going to get contacts."

Kirandeep, 14, London, England

"No! Glasses are awful. I've worn them since I was about seven and I've always wanted contact lenses. I got lenses about a month ago and they're SO much better. I can wear sunglasses and, to be honest, I look fab."

Millie, 13, Wolverhampton, England

"I've worn glasses for three years and have never been teased about it. I have never seen people being teased about it. I think people are more mature now and know it's silly to tease someone if they have to wear glasses."

Simran, 14, England

"I have worn glasses full-time since I was in year four. Some people teased me but I was more intelligent than them and made them feel stupid when I shot back with great comebacks! A year later I got braces, which I had until year seven. At one point I had a head brace and glasses, but I survived and it made me a stronger person. So if you think you had it tough, think about that! The problem that I face now is finding glasses that are affordable and look cool, because the NHS voucher is only about £30. Choosing new glasses is fun and a big commitment, because you have to choose a pair that you will be happy with for at least the next six months!"

Hannah, 14, Chichester, England

"I have been wearing glasses since I was two and used to get bullied a lot at my old school. I still do now but it's not as bad as it used to be. People call me 'four eyes' and 'geek.' I tell my teachers but they don't always do anything about it. I wish people would just treat me the same as my friends because it's not very nice being called names. I have to wear glasses and I don't mind. I think they are cool."

Bradley, 8, Bath, England

"I wear glasses and I have never got bulled since I had my first pair. I think they are trendy and cool. I think people are just jealous when they bully people."

Ciara, 9, London, England

"I wear glasses. I don't mind, at least I can see! I don't like it that much, but at least I have nice glasses - I used to have really geeky ones!! I never wore them because I hated them!!"

Kate, 14, Worcester, England

"I wear glasses and have done for six years. I love choosing new frames, and glasses are considered a fashion accessory nowadays. I'd never wear contact lenses!!!"

Beth, 13, Bradford, England

"I wear glasses, but they are really nice and stylish. I have also started wearing contact lenses just last week and I think they are great. If you are being picked on, ignore the comments. Whoever is bullying you is just jealous because you wear awesome glasses!"

Molly, 13, England

"I feel really strongly about people who wear glasses. My sister wears glasses and she does get bullied at school. She's only seven and she's already being bullied. I'm in secondary school so I can't be there for her. She came home crying about her glasses - people had been calling her 'four eyes.' But what I'm going to say for people who get bullied is to just walk away and ignore them. Stand up for yourself; it's the bullies who should be worrying because bullies only bully when they have something wrong with their lives."

Lexie, 12, Southampton, England

"I have to wear glasses. I don't mind them that much. Some people think glasses are uncool and make fun of people that wear them. That hasn't happened to me apart from the odd "Four eyes!" I get. But then I just say "Oh, yeah. I'm so cool because I get to have four eyes and you've only got two so hah!" You just have to act like you don't care what they say. Loads of cool people wear glasses, like Mikey Way from My Chemical Romance, and others wear glasses and they don't get bullied because of them. Plus, you can get them in all sorts of funky styles. Some kids wear them even though they don't need them because they think they look cool!"

Ray, 12, West Midlands, England

"I think that people who wear glasses are no different from anyone else. It isn't their fault if they have to wear glasses, so people shouldn't bully them."

Alexander, 10, High Wycombe, England

"Quite a few people in my class wear glasses and they are treated no different; it's as if they're not wearing them. I think there are good, fashionable looking ones, which I am interested in, but I hate the big and fat ones."

Hayder, 12, London, England

"I personally don't wear glasses, but if I try on a friend or a family member's pair of glasses everybody says I look really good!! I would love to wear glasses!!"

Beatrice, 12, Lagos, Nigeria

"I like wearing glasses but sometimes I get teased and then I feel sad."

Paige, 7, Southampton, England

"I love my glasses! They are cool and half of my class wear them!"

Aoife, 8, Dublin, Ireland

"I am going to get my eyes tested to see if I do need glasses. I probably do - but I'm glad as long as they're cool ones!"

Molly, 10, Ipswich, England

"Wearing glasses is cool. I don't know why people get bullied. Having glasses is better than not having them. I don't have glasses but most of my friends do and I still play and talk to them. If they get bullied I stand up to the people who are bullying them. So people who have got them, don't be scared to wear them. Anyway, you need them."

Natalie, 10, Scotland

"I've been wearing glasses since I was 10, and I don't really like it much. A lot of people look awesome with glasses, but it's the fact that if you have glasses, you are automatically classed as a geek. To have red hair and glasses as well (like me) is even worse in the eyes of some ignorant people. But in the end, it's their problem and they should be less judgemental."

Em, 14, England

"I would love to wear glasses - I think that they're great! Anyway, I don't know why most people get bullied for wearing them. After all, lots of celebs wear them - for example, the Milky Bar Kid, Doctor Who, The Two Ronnies and Harry Potter!"

Matthew, 12, Sunderland, England

"I like wearing my glasses because they get darker when I go out in the sun because they are transition lenses! I have only been made fun of once or twice but I just ignore them!"

Lauren, 13, West Sussex, England

"I think wearing glasses is cool. I'd love to wear them if I could (as long as they weren't Harry Potter style)!"

Bethany, 11, Wales

"I think that wearing glasses is cool. They can come in all types of shapes and styles."

Ellie, 12, Somerset, England

"I have worn glasses since I was two and I wasn't really bullied but they did call me 'four-eyes' but earlier this year I got contact lenses and they are much better."

Robbie, 12, Scotland

"I wear my glasses and nobody bullies me. I only don't wear them when it's a special occasion or I want to look particularly nice. But designer ones are nice and so are sunglasses. If you don't like your glasses, I suggest you wear contact lenses."

Shyanne, 11, London, England

"I've been wearing glasses since I was six and when I was six I never wore them. Then I started wearing them and I was called a geek when I was 11 so now I don't wear them outside or even at home. The problem is it's not exactly improving my eyes so I don't what to do."

Clair, 13, Dartford, Kent

"Just because you wear glasses doesn't mean you're a freak or a nerd. Be proud of yourself - it's about what's inside, not outside."

Kayleigh, 12, Dorset, England

"Loads of people in my school are supposed to wear glasses but none do because of peer pressure. My best friend and I only wear ours when we get told by our parents or are quickly checking out what's on the board."

Rebecca, 13, Northamptonshire, England

"I wish I wore glasses. Lots of people in my school do and no-one gets picked on. It makes you look really cool and clever and there are some very stylish glasses!"

Holly, 14, Manchester, England

"Yes, just because it looks different doesn't mean people should make fun of people."

Emily, 10, Middlesex, England

"I have been called "Speccy four eyes" all my life, but I just choose to ignore it. If calling names is the best bullies can do to hurt someone's feelings, then they shouldn't even bother!!!"

Adam, 13, Bolton, England

"I don't wear glasses but people who do are just the same as people who don't. It's just ridiculous that children are getting bullied because of wearing glasses!!!"

Rhianna, 13, London, England

"I've worn glasses all my life and with the exception of a couple of names I have never been picked on. I didn't mind wearing them but now I have just started wearing contact lenses, which are just as good."

Alice, 14, Cornwall, England

"I think that it doesn't make a difference if you wear glasses or not. I only noticed a week ago that one of my closest friends wears glasses! No one takes it into account when becoming your friend."

Grace, 15, Bath, England

"I wear glasses myself and I do get called names like 'nerd' and 'geek.' I just ignore them because in the end, no-one is perfect. I do think that schools should do more to prevent bullying."

William, 13, Manchester, England

"Well, I think it really depends on the type of glasses you wear. It looks a lot better if you wear funky glasses than more unstylish ones. I wear quite stylish glasses and kids at my school don't pick on me. Some of them even wear them even though they don't need them because they think they look cool!"

Nelly, 10, London, England

"Of course it is; they are an accessory and a fashion item."

Bianca-Louise, 13, Scotland

"I think wearing glasses is cool because it is fashionable."

Kayleigh, 11, Salisbury, England

"I think that wearing glasses can be good or bad - bad because people pick on you but good because it makes you look more clever so when you're older you might get a better job."

Jamie, 12, Luton, England

"I did used to get bullied but I never really cared. Never really happens now. People know I don't care. I wear my glasses and I love it!"

Jordan, 12, Newcastle, England

"My best friend wears glasses. I think she looks awesome in them! I have seen lots of models with glasses. Bullies love excuses to tease people. Take no notice, because they're not worth it!"

Georgie, 11, Brighton, England

"I wear glasses and they are funky and everyone in my class wishes they had ones like mine. I am very proud that I wear glasses. I feel sorry for the people who get bullied."

Sara, 13, Nottingham, England

"I have always had glasses but never really wore them, now I am really self-conscious about them. I do take them in with me every day, so I guess that is a start!"

Aneesah, 13, Edinburgh, Scotland

"I don't like wearing glasses because sometimes people call me a boffin. But I just think, I need them, and who cares what they say? At least I can see with them!"

Emily 13, Kidderminster, England

"I wear glasses and I think they are really cool. People should stop bulling others who wear glasses because they wouldn't like it if they wore glasses and other kids were bulling them!"

Rebecca, 9, Glasgow, Scotland

"I wear glasses and like them. One kid in my form calls me names, but I don't care."

Bethany, 12, Watford, England

"I don't mind wearing glasses; mine are quite cool (pink!!!), but I think the media gives a bad picture about glasses. Have you seen a model on telly wearing glasses? Or a 'geek' without them? It's stupid: glasses + braces = geek! It makes me really cross!"

Katie, 12, Brighton, England

"I think that people who are skipping school should take time to think about what they're doing. People who bully people for wearing specs are just immature. The number of people wearing glasses now makes it a very idiotic way to insult someone. If someone comments on your glasses, just ignore it - if they think or know it upsets you, they'll just carry on. That's how petty they are. Don't skip school."

Helena, 12, London, England

"I have part time glasses. It is quite annoying having to rely on them to be able to see, e.g. if you forget them you feel vulnerable without them. I really want contacts. I think more celebs should wear glasses instead of contacts if they need them and then glasses would be cool and everyone would want them."

Alison, 13, Edinburgh, Scotland
