Cuba waits for Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike heads towards Cuba

Cuba is getting ready for one of the strongest storms of the year so far, as Hurricane Ike blows towards the island.

The winds have been measured at around 135 miles per hour (215km/h), making the storm a category four hurricane, which is the second highest.

Ike has already hammered the Turks and Caicos islands, which is a UK overseas territory, and is in the Caribbean.

The region is being battered by a fourth major storm in three weeks, as Hurricane Ike sweeps through.

It's hitting the Bahamas hard, and although it didn't hit the island of Haiti too hard, it did dump a lot of water on an island already hurting from previous storms.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has said Hurricane Ike is "extremely dangerous".

Already more than 600 people have been killed on Haiti by the storms that have swamped it during hurricane season.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been left without homes and many are relying on food aid to help them.

People living in America are also keeping an eye on Ike, but it's too early to work out exactly where it may hit first.
