Deadly storm Gustav hits Jamaica

A storm has hit Jamaica lashing it with strong winds and rains and tearing off roofs and uprooting trees.

Hurricane Gustav hit the Caribbean countries of Haiti and the Domincan Republic earlier this week, killing 51 people.

Afterwards, the storm weakened, but forecasters say it's gathering strength once again and could turn back into a hurricane at any time.

The storm is thought to be heading towards America.

In the city of New Orleans, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina three years ago, people are getting ready to leave their homes.

The Jamaican government issued a hurricane warning before the storm hit, bringing with it winds of 70mph.

Emergency officials have set up shelters, and are sending out supplies to some of the worst hit areas.

Later on Friday, the storm is expected to move towards the Cayman Islands, where people are preparing for a hurricane.

Airlines said they were putting on extra flights to evacuate tourists and residents wanting to get off the islands.

Forecasters say the storm could hit America anywhere from south Texas to Florida by Tuesday.
