The match was the Blues' first league game under new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Joe Cole scored after 12 minutes, with Nicolas Anelka, Frank Lampard and new signing Deco all following his lead.
But title holders Man United made an unimpressive start to their season, drawing 1-1 with Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
The Magpies were the first to score when Obafemi Martins powered home a header.
