GB medal hope out of Olympics

Frankie Gavin

One of Britain's best hopes for Olympic gold is on his way home, before the Games have even started.

Boxer Frankie Gavin was forced to pull out because he was too heavy to fight in the lightweight category.

The 23-year-old would have needed to weigh in at 60kg (9st 6lb) on every day he competed in Beijing. But he was 3lb (1.36kg) over that mark on Thursday.

GB boxing coach Terry Edwards said the lightweight world amateur champion was "completely devastated".

Terry Edwards said it was his decision that Gavin should pull out, and that Gavin had done everything he could to make his weight.

He said: "It was one of the hardest decisions I have made in my boxing career.

"I made it for the right reasons, to protect the health and safety of one of my boxers."
