Hurricane Dolly hammered into the coast between Texas and Mexico, lashing the region with winds of up to 160km/h.
About 5,000 people in Texas and 13,000 in Mexico evacuated to public shelters in the areas hit hardest.
And roughly 30cm of rain fell over Texas before the hurricane weakened to a tropical storm as it moved inland.
But rescue workers are still on alert in Texas and Mexico because more rain is on its way which could cause bad flooding problems.

The National Hurricane Centre in America said Dolly could dump up to 51cm of rain in South Texas and north-eastern Mexico in the coming days.
In Mexico, Governor Eugenio Hernandez said: "Strong winds are no longer the problem. Now we have to worry about intense rain in the next 24 hours."
